The Bahamas at a glance

The Bahamas is a name that immediately brings to mind visions of fine white sand and crystal-clear water. Sitting between Cuba and Florida, this destination is legendary for its postcard-perfect scenery.

An island for every type of traveler

Naturally, the go-to activities here are lounging on the beach and diving into the clear coastal waters. You have a massive selection of islands to choose from, catering to every travel style and budget.

Grand Bahama Island was developed specifically with tourism in mind. It sees heavy traffic from the US and offers a full range of water sports plus duty-free shopping. Look past the resort-heavy infrastructure, because the island is also home to two incredible natural sites: Lucayan National Park, which contains one of the world's largest underwater cave systems, and the Garden of the Groves, featuring 5,000 species of exotic plants.

Trying to escape the crowds? Head to Cat Island, the direct opposite of Grand Bahama. It remains deeply authentic, where locals still practice obeah (a form of folk magic), traditional medicine, and intricate basket weaving. The landscape is defined by mangroves, mahogany forests, and long stretches of pink sand beaches where you will find plenty of fish, sharks, and rays.

Nature, diving, and luxury

Bimini is a true island paradise. It is a prime diving spot known for its rich marine life, including pods of spotted dolphins. It is also a great place to experience the local nightlife in Alice Town. If you are looking for an archipelago that lives up to the hype, Exumas will not disappoint. Its 365 islands and cays, one to explore for every day of the year, are bordered by a protected coral reef. If you want a genuine escape from the grid, the islands of Long Island and Andros are among the least touristy parts of the Bahamas, offering spectacular, rugged landscapes. Finally, you can follow the footsteps of Christopher Columbus by landing on the shores of San Salvador, the first land the explorer touched in the Americas.

You can round out your trip by spending time away from the sand in Nassau, the capital. It has a distinct North American feel, mixing modern construction with traditional pastel-colored wooden houses. Take the bridge over to Paradise Island, a hub for high-end resorts. The Atlantis and its massive aquarium are among the most recognizable hotels in the region.

When to go

You can visit the Bahamas year-round, which is a major part of the destination's appeal. The weather is almost always pleasant and the water temperature is consistently ideal. The most popular time for travelers is from December to April, largely to avoid the risk of storms and hurricanes that can occur between June and October.

Getting there

Direct flights from Europe are rare. The most efficient way to arrive is to fly into a major North American hub like Miami, Orlando, New York, or Boston, then book a connecting flight to Nassau. The total travel time is generally around 13 hours, with round-trip costs typically ranging from 550 to 730 EUR (about $600 to $800).
