French Guiana at a Glance

French Guiana sits on the northern coast of South America, across the Atlantic Ocean from mainland France. About ninety-five percent of this massive territory is covered by dense rainforest, home to one of the largest protected natural reserves on the planet. Travelers come here for deep jungle expeditions far off the beaten path.

Cayenne and the Costume Carnival

Exploring French Guiana brings plenty of surprises. Most trips start in Cayenne, the coastal capital. It is a colorful city with deep cultural roots, featuring brightly painted Creole houses and mangrove-fringed shorelines. Cayenne also hosts its famous two-month-long Carnival of Guiana every year. The masked balls are recognized for their rare traditions and Creole origins. The touloulous, women dressed in elaborate, colorful costumes, are the icons of the celebration.

By Dugout Canoe Through Jungles and Swamps

Nature rules in French Guiana, and one of the best ways to experience it is by taking a motorized dugout canoe up the Maroni River. This waterway connects remote settlements hidden deep in the forest. For an up-close look at local wildlife, head out to the Kaw marshes. This massive wetland area serves as a primary habitat for caimans and dozens of bird species. The Sinnamary area offers similar opportunities for kayaking and canoeing through coastal estuaries.

The Salvation Islands and the Kourou Space Center

Off the coast, a boat trip to the Salvation Islands offers a stark contrast to the jungle heat. Île Royale, Île du Diable, and Île Saint-Joseph form a peaceful island archipelago today, though their history is far darker as former penal colonies. For a deeper dive into that chapter of local history, head to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, a town built largely by transported convicts. Space enthusiasts should not miss the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, known globally as the launch site for Europe's Ariane rockets. If your timing aligns with a launch schedule, watching a rocket lift off from the tropical coastline is a rare spectacle.

When to go

The dry season running from mid-August to mid-November offers the most favorable weather for visiting French Guiana. September and October see the highest amount of sunshine. January and February draw visitors looking to experience the peak of carnival season, while April through June brings nesting leatherback turtles to the beaches.

How to get there

No airline flies nonstop from North America, so most itineraries connect in Paris, Fort-de-France, or Pointe-à-Pitre. The Paris leg alone costs $570 to $680* and takes about 9 hours. Regular connections also run from Guadeloupe and Martinique.
