Visiting Arenal, where volcanoes meet adventure
Arenal Volcano: a natural icon
Located near the town of La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Costa Rica. While its volcanic activity has been dormant since 2010, its near-perfect conical silhouette remains a sight to behold. You can explore the Arenal Volcano National Park, which features trails that bring you up close to ancient lava flows and offer prime spots for spotting local wildlife. The views of the volcano are clearest on sunny days, much like the visibility you get on a crisp morning in the Pacific Northwest.
Hot springs and relaxation
The region is famous for its natural hot springs, fueled by the area's geothermal energy. Resorts like Tabacón or Baldi Hot Springs offer thermal pools nestled in tropical gardens, perfect for unwinding after a long day of hiking. For a more rugged experience, you can visit free, natural spots like Río Chollín, where you can soak in the warm water without an entrance fee.
Adventure and nature
The areas surrounding Arenal are packed with activities for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. You can spend your days hiking through the rainforest, walking across suspension bridges, or zip-lining through the canopy to see the local biodiversity. Lake Arenal, situated right at the base of the volcano, is a prime spot for kayaking, fishing, or stand-up paddleboarding. For those looking for an adrenaline rush, the nearby rivers offer some excellent whitewater rafting.
Local food and fresh produce
In La Fortuna, restaurants serve staples like the casado, a traditional plate featuring rice, beans, a choice of meat or fish, and fried plantains. If you are a coffee fan, make time for a tour of a local plantation to see how the beans are processed and, of course, to sample the final product. You will also find an abundance of fresh tropical fruits in the area, including pineapple and papaya.
When to go
The best time to visit Arenal is from December to April. During this dry season, the weather is ideal for hitting the national park trails and enjoying outdoor activities. During the rainy season, from May to November, showers are frequent, but the landscape turns incredibly lush. If you are into birdwatching or wildlife photography, this wetter period is actually a great time to see the forest at its most active.
How to get there
Arenal is about a 3-hour drive from San José. If you are taking public transit, you can catch a bus to La Fortuna, the main gateway to the region. Buses departing from the San Carlos station cost about 2,500 CRC (approximately $5) for a 4-hour ride. If you prefer a more direct route to your hotel, private shuttles are available for 15,000 to 25,000 CRC (about $30 to $50) per person.
Arenal is a good stop before heading to Monteverde, the climate changes little by little and so do the landscapes.
The volcano hot springs are perfect for recharging after a day exploring the magic of Rio Celeste.
