Visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York

One of the favorite museums for New Yorkers

Located in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, between 5th and 6th Avenues in New York, the Museum of Modern Art, known as MoMA, stands as one of the most recognized and influential institutions in the Big Apple. Founded in the late 1920s through the initiative of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, and two of her friends who were also patrons, its mission was to collect and highlight the then-emerging modern American art. Unlike in Europe, where museums are often the result of government policy, private American stakeholders played a major role in the design and reach of these institutions. As a pioneer in its field, the MoMA quickly grew to include an impressive 150,000 works, which constitutes the largest collection of modern paintings in the world. It has continued to evolve, becoming a model of success. After several relocations, it was the first to commission major international architects to design its striking glass facade.

Highlights at the MoMA

Start your visit on the 6th floor, which houses the temporary exhibitions. Since the layout is reverse-chronological, you will admire the most contemporary works first and finish with those from the early 20th century. If you are short on time, do not miss: the Water Lilies triptych by Claude Monet, The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso, Gold Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol, as well as numerous canvases by Matisse, Braque, Pollock, Dali, and others.

Film library, gift shop, and summer concerts

In the basement, a film library with two theaters is accessible to ticket holders. The MoMA store offers enthusiasts an impressive collection of books on contemporary art and New York, as well as the chance to pick up small souvenirs like kitchen utensils. Finally, free concerts are held in the garden throughout the summer. Check the schedule online for details.

Surprising

This museum is really huge, it spreads over 6 floors! Since it is a modern art museum, expect some original and sometimes surprising pieces. The collections are rich and varied, with some exhibitions being more interesting and accessible than others. Still, it remains a must-see museum in New York for me.

Pretty uneven collection

A big, famous New York museum specializing in modern art, just like the name says.
Definitely worth seeing, but I wouldn't say that every piece on display is a must-see. Some are plain, insignificant, and boring, while others are the complete opposite, with mind-blowing ingenuity or creativity.

Comprehensive and sometimes quirky

A global benchmark for contemporary art. Very diverse collections. A must see.

Surprising

I really like contemporary art because you are sometimes surprised by what you can see or discover. The MoMA, in NY, is the mecca of contemporary art. A pilgrimage to make at least once in your life then :-)

A must-see for contemporary art

Tons of works to see. Lots of original and creative stuff.

Okay, there are some very "useless" works too, just like in any self-respecting modern art museum :)

Surprising

Not always very pretty, even a little grotesque at times.
That said, it is a museum where you find a lot of surprises.

Interesting

I really liked my visit to the MoMA. I booked my time slot online because there was a temporary exhibit on Picasso's sculptures. Less waiting, so that is great. This temporary exhibit was very good! As for the "modern" side, I am a bit less of a fan, but there were still some interesting pieces (I really liked Joaquín Torres-García). I was happy to see that there were still a few classics, including a very beautiful room dedicated to Monet and his water lilies, but also some Van Gogh, etc. It was crowded, but things moved along pretty well.

The MoMA!

The MoMA is a great place to visit with the family. Often you do not realize how much little ones enjoy looking at paintings or sculptures. Here you will find rooms and galleries dedicated to children, activities reserved just for them, and audio guides designed for them.
Generally speaking, they all love Roy Lichtenstein, the New York artist and sculptor who dedicated his career to pop art.
Have a blast with your family!
