Visit Cavtat, a quiet escape on the Dubrovnik Riviera

Authentic heritage and atmosphere

Located about 12 miles south of Dubrovnik, Cavtat is a charming coastal town that draws you in with its calm pace and deep history. Founded by the Greeks as Epidaure and later rebuilt by the Romans, the town retains layers of antiquity and medieval charm. Its historic core, defined by stone houses and narrow paved alleys, is built for aimless wandering.

Do not miss the Račić Family Mausoleum, designed by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, which overlooks the town from Saint Roch Cemetery.

Preserved nature and beaches

Cavtat is fringed by pebble beaches and coves shaded by pine trees. The waterfront promenade, known as the Riva, is the standard spot for a walk along the water. For hikers, the surrounding hills and the Rat Peninsula offer easy trails with sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea and the nearby islands.

Cultural and artistic life

Cavtat is known for its connection to the painter Vlaho Bukovac, a major figure in Croatian art. His childhood home is now a museum that displays his work and offers a look at his life. The town also hosts cultural events like the Cavtat Summer Festival, which features open-air concerts and performances in historic settings.

Local flavors

Cavtat is a prime spot for Mediterranean food. Waterfront restaurants serve fresh seafood, specifically oysters and mussels from the Bay of Mali Ston, alongside traditional dishes like peka, which is meat or octopus slow-cooked under a heavy iron bell. Local wines, such as the Dubrovnik Malvasija, pair well with these meals.

When to go

Spring and autumn are best for experiencing Cavtat in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with mild temperatures. Summer is the time for swimming and cultural events, though the town sees more visitors. Winter is quiet, offering a chance to see the town's character without the crowds.

How to get there

Cavtat is easy to reach via Dubrovnik Airport, which is only 3 miles away. Direct flights connect Dubrovnik to many European cities. From Dubrovnik, regular buses and boats can get you to Cavtat in under 30 minutes. If you are driving, the coastal road offers a scenic route with clear views of the Adriatic.

Great find

I was pleasantly surprised by my day in Cavtat, which is very close to the airport. I wasn't expecting such a pretty town. The center is nice and you can enjoy the beach without any worries. There are also some good restaurants. If you want to be close to the airport, I highly recommend it.

Pleasant surprise

For our last night in Croatia, we booked an apartment in Cavtat for logistical reasons. Our flight was leaving very early in the morning, and Cavtat is right next to the airport.
I didn't have high expectations for visiting the town. In the end, we spent a very pleasant day and evening there. The narrow streets of the old town are picturesque. The coves along the peninsula are really cool (it is better to plan on renting a lounge chair, between €5 and €10 per day for the best spots). In the evening, we had dinner on a terrace by the water and the harbor.
On the hills above the town, you can see beautiful sunsets, and strangely enough, you are not too bothered by the passing planes.
