In the childhood home of Vlaho Bukovac, Mediterranean light as a studio
The scent of stone and aged wood greets you as you step into this tiered house tucked into the narrow streets of Cavtat. Between 1855 and 1874, this was the home of Vlaho Bukovac, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated Croatian painters of Central Europe.

Bukovac lived a life that was anything but typical for a 19th-century artist. He spent his youth as a sailor before heading to Paris to study under Alexandre Cabanel, eventually painting in major European courts from Prague to Zagreb. His childhood home, now a museum, traces this unique journey through period furniture, personal items, and his own canvases.
The site is part of the Museums of the Dubrovnik County (Muzeji Konavala) network and stands as one of the few Croatian artist homes open to the public that remains so close to its original state.

I didn't know him before, but Bukovac is a major artist in Croatia. He is a great painter. The visit to his childhood home is very interesting. Many objects are still in place, notably some easels. Several works are also on display. I really liked the very bucolic garden.
