The harbor wall facing the bora

A palm-fringed promenade curves around the harbor front, with beaches on one side and sunset-facing bars on the other. In between, the water shelters working fishing boats alongside luxury yachts.

The bay is framed by two peninsulas, the Sustjepan and Rat capes, which create a natural shelter. The main harbor sits just west of the old town and east of the Sustjepan peninsula.

Why stop at this harbor wall

During the era of the Republic of Dubrovnik, Cavtat ranked as the second most important port, serving as a hub for trade and administration right after the capital. That maritime role never truly left the town, and the harbor wall still functions as an official customs checkpoint today, marked by the yellow sign bearing a Q for entering and leaving Croatia.

A bay of two faces

The Rat peninsula shields the northern port within Tiha Bay, offering solid protection against the jugo wind while remaining completely exposed to the bora. Along the quay, depths range between 1.5 and 4 meters, and vessels moor stern-to or bow-to. A speed limit of 10 knots applies throughout the entire bay.

Closed for construction in 2023, the landing port reopened on May 1, 2024, and now operates year-round. The renovated quay features modern berths equipped with electricity and water hookups.

Toward the old town

Following the harbor wall leads right into the old town, where the Church of Saint Nicholas stands right on the waterfront, built in 1732 and serving as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Cavtat. Outdoor terraces and restaurants line the quay and wrap around Tiha Bay, sharing the exact same views as the moored boats.

Friendly tip: Allow twenty to thirty minutes to walk the length of the harbor wall, or longer if you continue into the old town. The port also hosts a customs checkpoint for recreational boaters, operating on specific office hours for entry and exit clearance.

Super cute

Cavtat Harbor is super cute. Even though it is not very big, the place is still nice for taking a walk and admiring the boats. Cavtat is a pretty town that enjoys a super convenient location really close to the airport. If you do not want to miss your flight, it is ideal.
