Visiting the City Walls of Dubrovnik, symbols of the city
A marvel of medieval architecture
The City Walls of Dubrovnik are one of the most recognizable landmarks in Croatia. These fortifications, constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, encircle the Old Town for nearly two kilometers. Exceptionally well preserved, they provide a direct look into the past, illustrating the strategic importance of this port city. Their massive walls, bastions, and towers stand as evidence of the influence once held by Dubrovnik, formerly a powerful Mediterranean trading hub known as Ragusa.
A unique panoramic view
Walking the walls offers an entirely different perspective on Dubrovnik. You will see spectacular views of the Old Town, with its signature red-tiled roofs, set against the crystal-clear water of the Adriatic. Visitors can walk the entire circuit in about two hours. Do not miss the vantage points from the Minceta Tower, the highest point on the walls, or the Bokar and Saint John bastions, which provide distinct angles of the city and the surrounding area.
A cultural and historical experience
Beyond the scenery, exploring the walls is an immersion into the history of Dubrovnik. You will learn how these defenses protected the city from invasions, including during the siege of 1991. Informational signs are located along the route, detailing various historical events. For fans of film and television, the walls served as a filming location for the series Game of Thrones, where they doubled as the walls of King's Landing.

Game of Thrones is what made me want to discover this city! Dubrovnik represents the capital of Westeros there, and I loved visiting the walls while imagining myself in the world of the series. I went at the end of the day to avoid the crowds and the heat. The light bathing the site was magnificent. The varied viewpoints let me admire the Adriatic, the island of Lokrum, and a mosaic of orange rooftops. By taking my time to take photos, I finished the loop in about two and a half hours. A must-see in the Croatian city.
