Tokyo hits your senses with full force. Between ancient shrines, neon-lit intersections, and endless food options, the city keeps every day feeling new. It is loud and demanding, yet it rewards both the urban explorer and the traveler looking for a quiet moment at a temple.
Just an hour from Tokyo, Kamakura packs centuries-old Zen temples, bamboo forests, and Pacific beaches into the compact footprint of Japan's former medieval capital. The massive bronze Great Buddha has watched over the town for seven centuries, while the retro Enoden train line hugs the coast, running so close to homes it feels like a neighbor's commute. Between bowls of fresh shirasu (whitebait) and minimalist cafes tucked into traditional wooden houses, this former samurai stronghold balances history and modern life with ease.
Nikko balances ornate history with high-altitude nature. You can spend your morning at the gold-leaf Toshogu shrine and your afternoon at Lake Chuzenji or the 97-meter Kegon Falls. After hiking in the surrounding national park, head to the sulfur springs of Yumoto Onsen to soak for around 1,000 JPY (about $7). It is an easy two-hour train ride from Tokyo, making it a practical day trip or overnight escape.
Hakone is a short train ride from Tokyo, offering a quiet mountain getaway centered on volcanic landscapes, Lake Ashi, and clear views of Mount Fuji. You can soak in natural hot springs or spend the afternoon at the Open-Air Museum and the Pola Museum of Art. It hits a similar rhythm to a weekend trip in the Catskills, blending outdoor activity with a deep-rooted spa culture.
Yokohama sits just a short train ride from Tokyo, offering a distinct mix of bold modern architecture and deep maritime history. You can spend your morning among the futuristic skyscrapers of Minato Mirai, grab lunch in one of the world's largest Chinatowns, and find quiet in the traditional Sankei-en Garden. It is a city that rewards aimless wandering.
Most travelers overlook this temple town just 10 minutes from the international airport. Its thousand-year-old Buddhist sanctuary, Edo-era main street, and legendary grilled eel restaurants make it a worthy stopover. Between the spiritual traditions and the constant hum of overhead jets, or the zen gardens and modern shopping centers, this destination offers a concentrated look at Japan that is easy to reach even on a short layover.
Hachioji is worth the trip. Less than an hour from Shinjuku, this former silk hub is home to Mount Takao, a sacred peak favored by tengu spirits that holds three Michelin stars. You can spot ascetics in meditation, try the local onion ramen found nowhere else in Japan, and finish your day at an onsen right by the trailhead. Far from the typical Tokyo neon, Hachioji offers a more intimate look at the country, defined by cedar forests and feudal lore.

A pretty little town in the Tokyo suburbs. It is very easily accessible (you can get there using the Chuo subway line, so zero hassle on that front). I found a calm, pretty authentic atmosphere. The main attraction is of course Mount Takao (which I recommend). But there are also several quality attractions like the art museum, the castle, the parks...

Like me, you might discover this city through the international airport, the point of arrival or departure in Japan. The area around the airport is not very attractive, as it is mostly hotels and a few shops.
But there are also some tourist attractions, like the pretty traditional shopping street and the temple! Also, if you want to relax, think about this lesser known destination that is easily accessible from Tokyo!

Tokyo is an intense city that is a completely different world. If possible, stay for a few days to settle in before continuing your visit through Japan. While the city remains a must-see, I personally preferred the more traditional and serene sites in the Japanese countryside. Try not to spend your whole trip in Tokyo.

Tokyo is obviously a must-see city in Japan, but I didn't find it very pleasant to live in. Aside from Asakusa and Ueno, two relatively quiet neighborhoods, Tokyo is a megalopolis where every trip is an obstacle course.
In the Akihabara, Shibuya, and Shinjuku districts, it is pure madness. Bright screens, shops of all kinds, maid cafes: you are truly immersed in the country. It is worth seeing, but a few days were enough for me!

Accessible by a 1 hour train ride from Tokyo, Kamakura is a pleasant city if you are looking for a bit of calm. Do not miss the Great Buddha! You can also visit some beautiful temples. The second Sunday of April is the Kamakura Matsuri, or Kamakura festival, at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. You will see horseback archery there, as well as a beautiful traditional dance. I recommend the experience!
