What to know about the Hachiko Statue, a symbol of legendary loyalty

Located in the heart of the energetic Shibuya district in Tokyo, the Hachiko Statue is more than just a monument. It embodies a true story that continues to resonate with locals and travelers from all over the world.

The moving story behind the statue

The statue honors Hachiko, an Akita Inu dog known for his extraordinary devotion to his owner, Professor Hidesaburo Ueno.

Every day after work, Hachiko would wait patiently for his owner in front of Shibuya Station. After the professor passed away suddenly in 1925, the dog continued to show up at the station daily for nearly a decade, always hoping for his return. The story of this exceptional loyalty touched the local population so deeply that this bronze statue was erected in 1934, shortly before Hachiko himself died.

A popular meeting point

Today, the statue is a landmark and a very popular spot in Tokyo, functioning primarily as a meeting point. You will see many locals and friends gathering here before heading out to nearby shops or cafes.

It is also the ideal spot to observe the famous Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world and a true tourist attraction in its own right. However, the area can get crowded, especially in the evenings and on weekends, which can occasionally dampen the intimate atmosphere tied to the original story.

What to see and do nearby?

After snapping a photo in front of the statue, take the opportunity to explore the immediate surroundings. You will find the Shibuya 109 shopping center, a hub for youth fashion trends, or the more recent Shibuya Scramble Square complex, which offers an impressive panoramic view from its observation deck.

Not far away, the trendy Harajuku neighborhood, with its eccentric boutiques and theme cafes, makes for another interesting stop to extend your walk. Finally, for a moment of quiet nearby, the Meiji-jingu shrine, located just a few subway stops away, provides a welcome break in a natural, peaceful setting.

Cute but not a must-see

Hachiko is the touching story of the dog who used to wait for his master at the station. It is hard not to melt. As for the statue itself, it is actually quite small and not necessarily easy to spot. Plus, it is not a very quiet spot. It serves as a meeting point, so there are a lot of people around. It is also a smoking area. In short, see it if you are in the neighborhood, but it is not worth a trip just for this.

Cute but really small

You have surely already heard of this dog who waited for his deceased master every evening at Shibuya Station for more than 10 years, back in the 1930s? This dog is Hachiko. And he is Japanese. A statue is dedicated to him next to the Shibuya Crossing. Of course, it is super cute for kids (or big kids), especially if they have seen the movie with Richard Gere. But the statue is so small that we struggled to find it...

Hachiko, the most famous Akita in Japan

If you are passing through Tokyo, you can pay a visit to Hachiko, the statue of an Akita dog, certainly the most famous dog in Japan. Right in the middle of the super lively Shibuya neighborhood, you cannot miss the statue of this dog who waited for his master in the same spot for ten years...a sign of loyalty.
Hachiko was very famous in the 30s, and he still is today. A ceremony in his honor takes place every year in Tokyo. His taxidermied body is kept at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo.
