Visiting Chambéry
As the historic capital of Savoie, Chambéry serves as the gateway to the Alps. It sits at the intersection of three natural parks: the Chartreuse, the Bauges, and the Vanoise. The area has been inhabited since the Middle Neolithic period, around 4000 BC. The city grew in power due to its strategic position on trade routes between Lyon and cities in northern Italy. Starting in the 13th century, the Dukes of Savoy established Chambéry as their capital, effectively breaking away from the control of the Holy Roman Empire. Many landmarks from this era remain, such as the Château des Ducs and its Sainte-Chapelle, which housed the Shroud of Turin from 1452 to 1578, before it was moved to Turin.
The rich heritage of Chambéry
Travelers often treat Chambéry as a simple stopover on the way to the mountains, but the city holds significant architectural value. The old town is packed with Renaissance-style private mansions connected by narrow passageways and hidden interior courtyards, similar to the famous traboules found in Vieux-Lyon. Start your walk at the bustling Place Saint-Léger, a central hub for local life, before wandering into the side streets. You will find the former residence of the Dukes of Savoy, now serving as the Prefecture, though parts of it are open to visitors. Don't miss the Grand Carillon while you are there, as it is one of the largest in the world with a system of 70 bells.
The Cathédrale Saint-François de Sales is a must-see in Chambéry, with an interior featuring extensive trompe-l'oeil paintings, making it one of the largest Gothic projects of its kind. In the historic center, you will also spot the city's emblem, the Fontaine des Éléphants. It was built to honor General de Boigne, who returned from successful military campaigns in India and funded a major urban beautification project for the city.
A city of culture and nature
For culture, visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts, housed in a former grain market, which displays an impressive collection of French and Italian art. The Musée Savoisien, located within a former 13th-century convent, provides deep insight into the history and culture of Savoie. The Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Chambéry is also notable, as it has been managed and organized by a community of volunteers for over 150 years. A bit further out, be sure to visit Les Charmettes, the home of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is now a small literary museum that offers scenic walking paths with views of the surrounding mountains.
The city is a perfect jumping-off point for outdoor activities, from canyoning in the Massif des Bauges to swimming in Lac du Bourget or Lac d'Aiguebelette.

How to get there?
Chambéry is served by its own regional airport, Chambéry-Savoie. You can also reach the city easily from Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport or the airport in Geneva. The city is also accessible via the TGV high-speed train. Once you arrive, you can use the V63 bike route, a greenway that connects you to the most beautiful spots in the region.
Spent a short weekend in Chambery almost by accident, without too many expectations. A very pleasant surprise, with an old town center full of charm and life. Lots of cozy spots to grab a drink or sit down for a meal at reasonable prices (though not exactly cheap either).
The setting of the city, with its mountains, is really lovely to see.
