Visiting Aix-les-Bains
Aix-les-Bains stands as one of the most significant historic towns in the Savoie region, nestled within Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It evolved from a thermal spa town into a fashionable resort destination during the Belle Époque. Today, the town draws visitors for its natural setting, deep cultural roots, and the quality of its mineral-rich waters.
Roman-era landmarks
You will find plenty to keep you occupied in Aix-les-Bains, regardless of your interests. History enthusiasts should head straight for the remnants of the Roman era scattered throughout the town. The Thermes, classified as a historic monument, have been in use since antiquity and offer a clear look at the history of thermal bathing. You can tour sections dating back thousands of years along with the later Art Deco installations and 20th-century treatment cabins. Another key Roman site, the Arc de Campanus, dates to the end of the 1st century and stands near the Porte de Diane. For deeper context, stop by the local archaeological museum.
Spiritual and artistic exploration
Aix-les-Bains holds a collection of notable religious and historical sites. The abbaye d’Hautecombe serves as the final resting place for the Counts of Savoy and the kings and queens of Italy, all while overlooking the blue expanse of Lake Bourget. In the medieval center, the église Notre-Dame-d’Aix-les-Bains features intricate stained-glass windows and a Byzantine aesthetic, often serving as a venue for classical music performances. For a serious dose of art, the musée Faure is the place to go, housing sculptures by Rodin and paintings representing seven major movements from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Swimming and hiking
The geography here is defined by nature. The area around the lac du Bourget offers paths for walking or cycling year-round. During the summer, you can use local public or private swimming areas like Le Bourget, Le Lido, or Rowing for a swim or a picnic. If you prefer flora, the parc floral des Thermes features manicured flower beds, gazebos, and a Moroccan-style fountain. Hikers have immediate access to trails at Mont Revard, the Dent du Chat, the Bauges Massif, or the Col de Chambotte. Families traveling with children often head to the animal park at La Grande Jeanne or the aviary at L’Impérial.
When to visit
Aix-les-Bains is a year-round destination. Summer remains the most popular time for those looking to enjoy the lake and outdoor activities in mild weather. Many travelers also visit during the colder months to utilize the heated thermal baths.
Getting there
If you are driving, the nearest major cities are Lyon (a 1-hour and 20-minute drive) and Grenoble (a 1-hour drive). These cities also serve as the primary gateways if you are flying in from other parts of France or connecting internationally. The town is also well-connected by rail via the Aix-les-Bains-Le Revard station.
Because of Covid, we stayed in France for our summer vacation. We headed to the mountains and picked Aix-les-Bains to have a little bit of everything.
A charming town, not too big, very clean, with good restaurants, a few museums to check out, and a casino. Very important, there is Lac du Bourget, with little beaches where you can swim. The water is cool but crystal clear.
Finally, all around the town, there are beautiful landscapes and trails for hiking or biking. Nature lovers will be thrilled!
