The red cliffs of Varkala are the town's most distinct feature. They provide a striking vantage point over the ocean and are lined with a string of cafes and artisan shops. Down below, Papanasam Beach is known for waters believed to have purifying properties in Hindu tradition. It is a dual-purpose space, functioning as both a tourist destination and a spiritual site where locals perform rituals to honor their ancestors.
The Janardanaswamy Temple, a thousand-year-old landmark
The Janardanaswamy Temple is one of the primary sanctuaries in Varkala. Dedicated to Vishnu, it attracts both pilgrims and visitors interested in Hindu architecture and rituals. Entry is typically restricted to Hindus, but the exterior and the atmosphere of the site are worth a look, especially during the annual festival held in March or April.

The best window for visiting Varkala is from November to March, when the weather is dry and temperatures hover around 86°F (30°C). The monsoon season, from June to September, makes the beaches less suitable for swimming. February and March are particularly lively, with various religious festivals taking place at the Janardanaswamy Temple.
How to get there?
Varkala is accessible by train, with a station connected to major Kerala cities like Trivandrum and Kochi. The Trivandrum International Airport is about 50 kilometers away, and you can reach the town by taxi or bus in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
How to get around?
The center of Varkala is very walkable, particularly the cliffside area. To explore the surrounding region, tuk-tuks and scooter rentals are readily available at reasonable rates.
Varkala is synonymous with beach life and relaxing, and it is true! Just be careful where you swim. Around here, the waves can be treacherous and are really powerful. Trust the locals and the experienced tourists, plus the currents are strong. Personally, I preferred enjoying the hotel pool with a sea view, top notch! Varkala offers many restaurants with great value for money. My favorite part remains the superb setting of the beaches surrounded by high cliffs with changing colors. As a bonus, many eagles fly over the area, so keep your eyes peeled to enjoy them.
