Where red cliffs drop straight into the Arabian Sea
A cliff of red laterite falls directly into the sea, with no intermediate beach to soften the drop. At the top, a paved path runs along the edge, lined with cafés facing the horizon, shops, and Ayurvedic massage parlors.
Below, the sand stretches down to the water. You will spot fishermen selling their catch right on the spot, along with occasional religious rituals, including memorial ceremonies for the departed.
Why visit Varkala Beach
It is the only spot in southern Kerala where cliffs rise directly along the sea. They are designated as a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India, a rare status for a coastline.
The beach also goes by the name of Papanasam Beach, as it is said that a bath in its waters washes away sins. This reputation makes it as much a pilgrimage site as a beach destination, two uses that intersect without truly blending.
The Janardana Swami Temple and the Arattu Festival
Nearby sits the Janardana Swami Temple, which hosts a ten-day festival twice a year called Arattu. These celebrations shape the local calendar and draw pilgrims from all over Kerala.
Between beach relaxation and adventure activities
The beach offers boating, parasailing, jet skiing, and horseback riding. Restaurants and cafés line the top of the cliff, though alcohol is not served here.
The site also features several water springs and Ayurvedic centers set right near the sand. Along certain stretches of the beach, the sand takes on a blackish tint due to thorium isotopes.
Good for
- Fans of unusual geological landscapes along the Indian coast
- Those looking to combine swimming, Ayurvedic treatments, and clifftop walks
Less suited for
- Anyone seeking a party beach scene with alcohol
- Visiting during the peak monsoon season, when swimming becomes hazardous
Friendly tip: plan your visit outside the monsoon season. If you take a clifftop walk late in the day, head back down before dark, as certain sections of the path are unlit.
How long for this activity
Plan for half a day to enjoy the beach and walk along the cliffs, or a full day if you are adding an Ayurvedic treatment and a meal with a sunset view.
Varkala Beach is very pleasant and will allow you to admire the cliffs. Be careful not to get too close to the water. The waves can be very dangerous and carry you away. In fact, the locals do not swim there. I advise you to do the same and keep a good distance from the ocean.
