That year, I remember we decided to spend our vacation in Germany. I was quite excited about the idea, but struggled to choose an itinerary because this beautiful country is so vast and everything is worth seeing. We only had three weeks, so my husband and I decided to head to Bavaria.
First stop in Freiburg

After crossing France from one side to the other, we arrived in Freiburg. This first stop was quite pleasant. Not only was the weather lovely, but we had an incredible view of the Black Forest. After choosing a small hotel near the cathedral, we decided to stay the next day to explore the city.
As a lover of historic stone architecture, I was captivated by remarkable buildings like the Freiburg Minster, as well as the square and the Old Merchants' Hall. I also admired the Whale House and several other buildings with gabled roofs, much like those you find in Holland. I also had time to visit the Augustinermuseum, which is the largest in the city and houses works by Grünewald, Baldung Grien, and many others.
The next day, we set off for Bavaria and traveled along the Romantic Road.
The Bavarian countryside
As soon as we arrived in this region, the landscape began to change as if by magic. We passed through charming villages with houses that looked like they had stepped right out of our childhood fairy tales. After a moment of hesitation, we decided to stay in a local homestay for a few days to better immerse ourselves and get to know the locals. This type of accommodation is very easy to find in the area and much more affordable than a hotel. We were hosted in a house adorned with countless geraniums in the windows, which competed in beauty with its neighbors.

Our Bavarian journey began that very day, as there was so much to see. After winding through vineyards and stunning valleys, we discovered rustic sites all along this beautiful route. I loved the half-timbered houses in the region's typical villages, as well as those magnificent castles steeped in legend. My favorite is Neuschwanstein, perched on its rocky spur. Not only is it filled with romantic history, but everything in and around it evokes love. The view is breathtaking and extends all the way to the Marienbrücke.
The Alpine Road and Munich
We then took the Alpine Road, continuing to choose the bed & breakfasts that abound in the region. We were amazed by all the towns we passed through, there were so many, and they were all so beautiful. I will always remember Lindau on Lake Constance and its wonderful island.

We ended this magnificent trip in Munich, where everything is architecture of such unique beauty. All styles coexist here, from Baroque and Renaissance to Rococo. I was impressed by the imposing City Hall and its carillon with its many little figures. The Nymphenburg Palace also charmed me with its history, its location, its park, its palace, and so many other beautiful details.
We left with heavy hearts, knowing we had only seen a tiny fraction of this wonderful country. I also fondly remember the kindness of the various hosts we met along the way, the local cuisine based on various roasted and often quite spicy meats, and the succulent pastries. I will also remember the Leberkäse for a long time; despite the name, which translates to "liver cheese," it contains no liver and is a very tasty local meatloaf. I now have a wonderful desire to return one day to continue our tour and see other regions.
