Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle
Located along the Bavarian Romantic Road, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited sites in Germany. King Louis II of Bavaria, a devotee of medieval legends and the operas of Wagner, commissioned the castle starting in 1869. Walt Disney reportedly used it as inspiration when designing the Sleeping Beauty castle.
A fairytale castle
With its high turrets and perch atop the rocky Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein Castle is visible from miles away. True to the king's vision, the structure is a deliberate blend of medieval architecture and the 19th-century neo-Gothic style.
Inside, more than 200 rooms were planned to suit the needs of Louis II, who wanted a palace reflecting his own interests, specifically Wagner and the tales of the swan knight Lohengrin. This is why the interior is filled with Romanticist imagery, featuring scenes of love, repentance, and chivalric quests. The intricate detail in the Throne Room, particularly its 4-meter-tall chandelier, is a highlight.
The retreat of the Mad King of Bavaria
Part of the appeal of visiting the castle lies in the legend surrounding it. King Louis II insisted on building this isolated palace on the ruins of a fortress that once belonged to the local Schwangau dynasty. Seeking to withdraw from public life and live within his own fantasies, he began residing alone in the massive castle in 1873. Unfortunately, this gargantuan project ended with the king's death. Only 15 of the 200 planned rooms were ever completed.

I visited during a school trip with a guide and it remains my favorite memory of Bavaria. The silhouette of this magnificent castle, emerging from the rocks and trees, left me in awe. I felt like I was in the middle of a fairy tale! The interior decoration immerses you in a delightful romantic atmosphere, full of medieval legends, with some very beautiful murals. The view from the castle courtyard is stunning.
I did regret that the tour was a bit short (about 30 minutes). I would have loved to take more time to discover the secrets of the monument!
