Why head up to Hafelekar
As the capital of the Tyrol region, Innsbruck sits right between the front ranges of the Alps and the Karwendel massif. The dramatic landscape is defined by its peaks, and with 125 summits rising over 2000 meters, it is a playground for anyone who loves mountain terrain. Hafelekar, or Hafelekarspitze, is not the highest peak at 2334 m, but the vantage points it offers are hard to beat. The ascent is made simple by a remarkable system of cable cars, making it one of the signature experiences in western Austria.
From city streets to the summit in 20 minutes
The Nordkette range rises directly to the north of Innsbruck. This mountain chain, part of the Karwendel, which is the largest nature park in the country, is a go-to for winter sports fans thanks to its two high-altitude stations, Seegrube and Hafelekar. This peak is the highest point of the range, and the views are just as impressive as they are easy to access.
Engineering feats allow for a seamless ascent via the funicular and cable car. It is the highest urban excursion in the region, and within roughly 20 minutes, you leave the city center behind for the high alpine environment. Trading the city noise for the silence of raw nature in such a short time is a unique experience.
A 360-degree view of the region
The landscape changes with the seasons, shifting from bright snow to the deep green of conifer forests and exposed rock. A short 15-minute walk leads to the peak, where you are rewarded with a 360-degree view. You can see the Inntal valley, the Wipptal, and the surrounding Tyrol landscape. Whether you are interested in hiking, hang gliding, paragliding, or just taking a moment to clear your head, Hafelekar provides a memorable experience.
