Visiting the Hofbräuhaus München

The Hofbräuhaus München is a famous beer hall in Munich established in 1589 by the Dukes of Bavaria. It remained an active production site until 1897, when brewing operations moved to a less central location in the city. The public has been welcomed into the establishment since 1828, following a decree by Ludwig I. Today, the beer hall is one of the most visited sites in Munich. The venue serves local Hofbräu beer alongside a menu of house-made regional specialties like sauerkraut, sausages, and pretzels.

Embracing Gemütlichkeit

Gemütlichkeit is a local term for the sense of well-being you feel when relaxing with friends in a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere, often over a good meal. Experience gemütlichkeit with your travel companions while enjoying a few beers or a traditional Bavarian dish at the Hofbräuhaus München.

When you arrive, do not be surprised to see regulars paying for their beer with tokens. This is a local currency used exclusively within the hall. One token is good for one liter of beer, a rate that remains fixed even if the standard price of a liter increases.

Germany's most prestigious beer hall

The Hofbräuhaus München was originally created to supply beer to prominent Munich families like the Wittelsbach dynasty. Since opening to the public in the 19th century, the establishment has hosted notable figures including Mozart, Lenin, and Josephine Baker. On a darker note, the beer hall is also known as the site where Adolf Hitler delivered the speech that launched the Nazi party in 1920.

The must-visit Bavarian beer hall

I couldn't leave without having dinner at this Bavarian institution at least once. It is a gigantic tavern with a wide selection of tasty local beers and traditional music, so everything is there to immerse you in the local atmosphere! You had better like cold cuts and sausages, because the restaurant mostly serves those, although they are very good. The only slight downside is that with the huge communal tables, it is a bit difficult to hear each other.

This is Bavaria

As you walk into this kind of historic beer hall, you understand why beer is so important in Bavaria and why there is Oktoberfest. It is simply part of the local and historic traditions, just like wine in the Bordeaux region. A detail that will help you understand this: there is a type of locker where regulars can store their own beer mug!

The place itself is very welcoming, with several rooms and terraces. You can come with your family, and they do not just serve alcohol!
