Uluwatu, southern Bali on the edge of the cliff

The roar of the waves carries up to the path, seventy meters above. At the tip of the Bukit peninsula, white limestone drops straight onto the reef, and every cove has to be earned by a stone stairway. Nobody comes here for the rice terraces: you come for the Indian Ocean.

Is it right for you?

Uluwatu appeals to surfers, of course, but also to anyone who wants Bali's sea without the crowds of Kuta. The beaches are small, hidden at the foot of the cliffs, and the evening light is among the finest on the island.

If you are looking for a long beach to walk for hours, or easy swimming at any time of day, look elsewhere. The waves are powerful, the reef breaks the surface at low tide, and almost everything means getting on a scooter.

Great for:

  • Experienced surfers
  • Couples chasing sunsets
  • Anyone who loves coves hidden at the bottom of a stairway
  • Fans of resorts hanging over the ocean

Not ideal for:

  • Beginner surfers
  • Families with young children who want an easy beach
  • Travelers who want neither to ride a scooter nor to rely on taxis

A budget from warung to resort

The peninsula mixes extremes. By the beaches, warungs serve nasi campur for a few tens of thousands of rupiah; on the cliffs, the big resorts and beach clubs post the highest prices in Bali. In between, the guesthouses of Bingin and Padang Padang stay affordable.

Practical realities

There is no real center: Uluwatu is a string of villages, beaches and resorts linked by a narrow road. A scooter is the simplest way to get from one to the next; otherwise ride-hailing apps work, but the wait gets longer in the evening. From the airport, allow three quarters of an hour to an hour, depending on the Jimbaran traffic.

On arrival in Bali, every foreign visitor pays a tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah, to be paid online before you travel. Carry cash: many small warungs and beach car parks do not take cards.

Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak at sunset

Pura Luhur Uluwatu clings to the edge of the cliff, facing the open sea. It is one of the six temples that guard the island against evil spirits. Entry costs 50,000 rupiah, sarong included. The temple monkeys steal sunglasses, hats and phones: keep everything in a closed bag.

Every evening at sunset, the nearby amphitheatre hosts the Kecak dance: dozens of men sitting in a circle chant "chak" in rhythm while the Ramayana plays out against the orange sky. Tickets cost 150,000 rupiah. We think it is the finest hour on the peninsula: arrive an hour early for a seat facing the sea.

The beaches at the foot of the cliffs

Padang Padang

A small cove of white sand reached through a cleft in the rock. It is pretty and easy to get to, so it is often full by late morning. The reef on the left holds one of the most famous waves on the island.

Suluban and Uluwatu beach

At the foot of the cliff, you reach Suluban by a stairway and then a cave carved into the limestone. At low tide, sand appears between the rocks; at high tide, it almost disappears. This is where surfers paddle out to the Uluwatu wave.

Bingin

Houses and small hotels stacked up the cliff face, a steep stairway and a narrow beach. Bingin has kept the feel of a surf village, calmer than Padang Padang.

Balangan and Melasti

Balangan, further north, unrolls a long strip of sand under the cliff, easier for swimming. To the east, Melasti is reached by a road cut through the rock, down to calm turquoise water.

Insider tip: check the tide times before you go down. At high tide, several beaches shrink to a few meters of sand, and at low tide the reef makes swimming dangerous.

Surfing, Uluwatu's reason for being

The peninsula owes its reputation to its reef waves, long and powerful, breaking over the coral. Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Impossibles: these are spots for experienced surfers, often crowded in season. For a first time, take a lesson at Balangan or on the sandy beaches of Kuta, further north.

Where to eat and drink in Uluwatu?

By the beaches, look for a warung: nasi campur, mie goreng or grilled fish, your feet almost in the sand. The cafés on the main road serve fruit bowls and coffee the way Australian surfers like them.

In the evening, the beach clubs perched on the cliffs fill up for sunset, cocktail in hand and music in the background. They are expensive, but the view over the ocean is worth at least one drink.

When to go to Uluwatu?

The dry season, from April to October, is the best time: clear skies, offshore winds and the west-coast waves at their best. It is also high season, peaking in July and August.

From November to March, the rainy season brings short, heavy showers, and surfers move to the east side of the peninsula. In March, on Nyepi, the whole island stops: the airport closes, and you are not allowed to leave your hotel.
