Uluwatu Temple in Bali

Where to stay in Uluwatu: the 2 areas to know in 2026

Uluwatu has no centre. It is a road running along the cliff, with stairways dropping off it to coves, warungs and resorts. The real choice is between two worlds: the surfers' village, at Bingin and Padang Padang, and the big resorts on the southern cliffs, near the temple.

A guesthouse room starts at $34*, a good hotel runs $113 to $210*, and the villas with a pool above the ocean go beyond $450*. Two areas follow, ten minutes apart by scooter.

1

Bingin and Padang Padang The west coast of the Bukit, from Bingin to Padang Padang and the Labuan Sait road

for living at the surfers' pace, walking distance from the beaches

The lively heart of Uluwatu. At Bingin, guesthouses cling to the cliff above a narrow beach, reached by a steep stairway. Padang Padang, next door, hides its cove behind a cleft in the rock. Along the road, cafés, warungs and board-rental shops. The downside: the traffic on the Labuan Sait road, and beaches that are full by late morning.

The southern cliffs and the temple The south of the peninsula, from Suluban to Uluwatu Temple and the Pecatu cliffs

for a resort above the ocean, in peace, near the temple

Here the cliff is higher and the houses fewer. Uluwatu Temple and its evening Kecak are a few minutes away, and Suluban is reached through a cave at the foot of the rock. The big resorts have taken the best views, with pools facing the horizon. The downside: nothing on foot, and you need a scooter or a taxi for every meal outside the hotel.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Plan for a scooter or a driver: Places are spread along a clifftop road with no pavement. Rent a scooter if you are comfortable, otherwise ride-hailing apps work, but the wait gets longer in the evening. Ask the hotel whether it runs a shuttle.
  • Count the steps before you book: The best addresses are on the cliff, and the beach is often several hundred steps below. If you are travelling with young children or find walking hard, choose a hotel with a pool and an easy beach, such as Balangan.
  • Book high season early: From June to August, and at Christmas, the best guesthouses in Bingin and the clifftop villas are full weeks ahead. In April, May and September, the weather is the same and prices drop.
Where not to stay in Uluwatu
  • Staying in Kuta to surf in Uluwatu: the Jimbaran traffic eats an hour every day.
  • Choosing an isolated villa with no way to get around: every meal becomes a journey.
