A Fortress Dominating the City From Its Volcanic Base

Perched on Castle Rock, a volcanic plug towering over downtown Edinburgh, the castle commands the skyline with its gray stone silhouette for anyone looking up from Princes Street. The fortified compound stretches along the ridge, dotted with buildings from different eras.

Inside, several structures follow one another: a small Romanesque chapel, a military museum, a hall displaying the Scottish crown jewels, and an old siege cannon.

Why Visit Edinburgh Castle

The site has been occupied for centuries and remains one of the oldest fortified sites in Europe. Every building tells a different layer of Scottish history, from the medieval period to the Napoleonic conflicts.

It is also from this promontory that the city unfolds in a single view: the Old Town below, the Royal Mile running toward the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Firth of Forth in the distance.

St Margaret's Chapel, the Oldest Survivor on Site

Built in Norman architecture, this small chapel is the oldest surviving structure in the castle. It was raised in memory of the mother of King David I of Scotland.

The Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny

The Honours of Scotland room preserves a crown, a state sword, and a scepter, forming one of the oldest collections of royal regalia in Europe.

Visitors also see the Stone of Destiny, used during the coronation of Scottish kings. Taken in 1296 by the English king Edward I, it remained in London for seven centuries before returning to Scotland in 1996.

Mons Meg and the One O'Clock Gun

Mons Meg, a 15th-century siege cannon weighing six tons, bears witness to Scottish military might under the reign of James II. It now sits silent within the walls.

Every day except Sunday at 1:00 PM, a gunshot rings out from the castle. This tradition, established in 1861 to give the time to sailors and townspeople, continues today as a symbolic ritual.

The National War Museum

This museum traces the country's military history through weapons, armor, paintings, traditional uniforms, and soldiers' letters. The basements also house reconstructed old prisoner-of-war cells complete with straw mattresses and hammocks, used from the Seven Years' War to the Napoleonic Wars.

A castle with a turbulent history

Built on an ancient volcano, the castle houses several buildings from different eras. According to the guide, the site has been continuously inhabited for over 3,000 years, which apparently is a European record (though I have my doubts about that).

I recommend taking the guided tour to get lots of info and fun facts about the castle and Scotland, from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and all the way up to the recent world wars.

Try to be there in person if you want to catch the cannon firing, the one o'clock gun.

From the ramparts, you get a lovely view of the surrounding area.

I highly recommend visiting Edinburgh Castle if you are in the city. This pretty impressive building offers a superb view of the surroundings. It is perfect for taking some great photos. The museums inside are also very interesting. You will learn more about Scottish culture and history. It is worth seeing at least once.

So Scottish

This castle that towers over the city and is visible as soon as the view is clear is intriguing. I went there! Pretty panoramas. As for the rest, it is quite uneven.

Worth doing at least once

If you are visiting Edinburgh for the first time, I recommend taking a tour of this castle. It is not necessarily essential to visit every museum inside, but it is great to see the city from that height.

Best view in Edinburgh

Built at the top of a green hill (a nice walk, by the way) that overlooks the city, the Castle offers an incredible view of Edinburgh and its surroundings. The war museum and the barracks inside will interest those who are passionate about history and Scottish culture.
I was a little disappointed by the crown jewels on display. On the other hand, I thought the cannon shot fired at 1:00 PM (without a real cannonball, of course) was cool. This daily ritual (except on Sundays) dates back to 1861 and can be heard for several kilometers around. The one o'clock gun was simply used to remind the people of Edinburgh of the time.
Small downside: the entrance price is pretty steep, around €20 per person (about $22).
