Explore Edinburgh Castle
Perched atop the volcanic plug of Castle Hill, Edinburgh Castle is a former medieval fortress that defines the city skyline. Its massive defensive walls and collection of historic buildings make it one of the longest-standing fortified sites in Europe.
The One O'Clock Gun
Every day except Sunday, you will hear the one o'clock gun fire at 1:00 PM. This tradition began in 1861 and is still carried out today by the District Gunner. Historically, the cannon blast served as a time signal for sailors and local residents to set their watches. Why 1:00 PM instead of noon? The math was simple: it was cheaper to fire a single shot than it was to fire twelve.
St. Margaret's Chapel
This small chapel, featuring distinct Norman architecture, is the oldest standing building within the walls of Edinburgh Castle. It was constructed as a memorial to the mother of David I.
The Honours of Scotland
Also known as the Honours of Scotland, these regalia consist of a crown, a ceremonial sword, and a scepter. They represent one of the oldest sets of coronation jewels in the Christian world. You can also view the "Stone of Destiny", the ancient symbol used in the inauguration of Scottish monarchs. The stone was seized in 1296 by Edward I of England and remained in London for 700 years. It was finally returned to Scotland in 1996.
The Scottish National War Memorial
This military museum chronicles the history of Scotland through a collection of weaponry, armor, and fine art. The exhibits also include traditional uniforms, personal artifacts, and letters written by soldiers from various periods.
Mons Meg
This massive 15th-century siege cannon weighs six tons and once boasted a range of 2 miles. It stands as a symbol of the military power of Scotland during the reign of James II.
Prisons of War
Reconstructed in the vaults of the castle, these dark dungeons feature straw pallets and hammocks that replicate the harsh conditions endured by prisoners of war from the Seven Years' War through the Napoleonic Wars.
