Windsor Castle is a popular site and a home to the British royal family. It is the largest occupied castle in the world, spanning 13 acres of buildings and 32 acres of grounds. More than a tower, this is a fortress and a massive prison. The Tower of London served as a royal residence and, notably, a state prison through the Second World War. Explore with the Yeomen Warders, the ceremonial guards of the British monarchy. Visit the White Tower, Salt Tower, and Tower Green, where famous figures were once held and executed. See the Medieval Palace for its period furnishings and the Crown Jewels housed in the Waterloo Barracks.
Perched on a cliff overlooking the River Ness since 1057, Inverness Castle embodies nearly a millennium of turbulent Scottish history. The current pink sandstone Victorian building, designed by William Burn in 1836, replaced a medieval fortress destroyed by the Jacobites in 1746. Reopening in late 2025 as an immersive cultural site, it features interactive exhibits, Gaelic gardens, and panoramic terraces.
Built in the 18th century, Fort George has never been conquered, though it never faced a major siege. This military masterpiece near Inverness guards the Moray Firth. Today, it serves as an active base and a site for history lovers or dolphin spotting. Explore three centuries of Scottish military tradition at the Highlanders' Regimental Museum.
Home to the Campbell family since the 14th century, Cawdor Castle draws visitors with its ancient holy hawthorn inside the medieval tower and its literary connection to Shakespeare. This storybook fortress near Inverness features refined, lived-in interiors, three distinct gardens, and the Cawdor Big Wood, one of Europe's finest oak forests with 8 km of trails.
At the foot of the Royal Mile, this royal residence abuts the ruins of a medieval abbey founded in the twelfth century. You will explore the chambers of Mary Stuart, which witnessed the murder of her secretary, alongside a seventeenth-century baroque facade.
The tour also includes the Great Gallery and a sprawling landscaped park.
As the official residence of the British Royal Family and the primary home of Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace hosts state visits and royal ceremonies. In summer, when the Queen is in Scotland, the public can tour rooms like The Grand Staircase, The State Dining Room, The Picture Gallery, The Green Drawing Room, and the Throne Room.
Catch the Changing of the Guard at 11:00 am, held daily in summer and every other day during winter.
Culzean Castle sits perched on the cliffs of Ayrshire near Maybole on the west coast of the United Kingdom. Now managed by the National Trust for Scotland, this historic estate once belonged to David Kennedy in the late eighteenth century. It even features on the five-pound note issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland since 1867, surrounded by dramatic coastal nature and local ghost stories.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse (the holy cross), right next to the former abbey of the same name, sits at the opposite end of Edinburgh Castle from the Royal Mile, and at the foot of Arthur's Seat.
Unlike the Castle, the area around the Palace is much less lively.
The Palace itself: you follow a self-guided route with audio guide commentary that leads you to the royal bedrooms and Mary Stuart's reception room, where her private secretary was murdered right in front of her by her husband.
The tour lets you learn a lot about the Crown of Scotland, the Stuart dynasty, and how it joined with the British crown. The rooms still have their period furniture and decor (the royal family still visits…

I recommend taking the guided tour to get lots of info and fun facts about the castle and Scotland, from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and all the way up to the recent world wars.
Try to be there in person if you want to catch the cannon firing, the one o'clock gun.
From the ramparts, you get a lovely view of the surrounding area.

The Tower of London is a vestige of medieval London, and there are actually very few of those left in the British capital. The story of Roger Mortimer, who was imprisoned there, really stuck with me when I read The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon. This monument is truly typical of an austere era, but one that still fascinates me just as much.

I found the visit to Inverness Castle very interesting. The route is well laid out and lets you discover the whole history of the Highlands. It really lets you dive into the region's past. Even though the castle is not from the original period, it is still a beautiful building that fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape.

This fort has pretty impressive architecture. You get a really beautiful view of the sea from the heights. Even though it is still being used by the military, you can visit it. Even if you do not have access to the entire fort, plenty of rooms are open to the public. An audio guide can accompany you during your visit.

This castle is very well maintained and preserved. You can visit the gardens all year round, as they are perfectly kept, but the interior is only accessible during certain periods. In fact, the castle is still inhabited. I had the chance to talk with the owners, who are very friendly. It is a very interesting visit.
