Visiting Saint-Denis, a history that demands attention

Just outside Paris, the city of Saint-Denis is a place of sharp contrasts and deep history. Known primarily for its basilica, the final resting place of French royalty, the city intrigues visitors with its mix of a prestigious past, a multicultural present, and ongoing urban evolution. It attracts those interested in history as much as travelers looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience.

A unique historical legacy in the Île-de-France

The main draw of Saint-Denis is undoubtedly the basilica-cathedral Saint-Denis, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the royal necropolis. More than 70 kings and queens are buried here, including Catherine de Médicis and François Ier. The monument is striking for its stained glass, its carved effigies, and its solemn atmosphere.

A short walk away, the musée d'Art et d'Histoire, housed in a former Carmelite convent, offers a deep dive into the city's timeline from antiquity to the present. The old town center also preserves some picturesque narrow streets, particularly around the place du Caquet, where a market is held on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. It is one of the largest markets in the Île-de-France, lively and colorful, and the best way to get a feel for the local character of the city.

Contemporary culture and major events

Saint-Denis is not defined solely by its past, as it is also a hub for contemporary artistic creation. The Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord, 6b (a self-managed creative space on the banks of the canal Saint-Denis), and the studios of the Cité du Cinéma founded by Luc Besson, all showcase this penchant for innovation.

The city is also inseparable from the Stade de France. Whether you are into soccer, rugby, or massive concerts, this temple of French popular culture hosts major international events every year. Guided tours are available to explore the locker rooms, the tunnels, and the stands.

A city in transition

Long associated with a difficult reputation, Saint-Denis is undergoing deep changes. Numerous urban projects are redeveloping old industrial sectors, particularly along the canal. The Plaine neighborhood, once derelict, is now a major economic hub home to large corporations and television studios.

Is Saint-Denis dangerous?

It is fair to say that some parts of Saint-Denis, particularly at night, can present safety issues. It is best to avoid wandering alone after dark, especially near the RER stations. However, during the day and in tourist-frequented areas like the historic center or around the Stade de France, the atmosphere is generally safe. Like any urban environment, use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings.

A gateway to the northern Paris region

The geography of Saint-Denis makes it a practical base for exploring other parts of the northern Île-de-France. Nearby, you will find la Villette, the Parc de la Légion d'Honneur, the canal de Saint-Denis for walking or cycling, and the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, which is reachable in just a few metro stops.

Where to eat?

  • Le Méli Mélo (city center): A cozy and accessible spot offering a mix of African, Creole, and Middle Eastern dishes.
  • Le Coin de l'Afrique (Basilique neighborhood): Generous Senegalese cuisine with a friendly atmosphere and large portions.
  • La 3ème Mi-Temps (Plaine-Saint-Denis): A modern brasserie popular on match nights, just steps from the Stade de France.
  • Maison Tajine (rue de la République): Great value for traditional, homemade Moroccan dishes.

Where to stay?

  • B&B HOTEL Paris Saint-Denis Porte de Paris (Porte de Paris): A simple, modern hotel ideal for travelers who want quick access to the metro and the basilica. Clean rooms and good service at a solid price point.
  • Novotel Paris Saint-Denis Stade Basilique (Stade de France): A comfortable 4-star hotel with spacious rooms and an on-site restaurant. Perfect for families or those attending an event at the stadium.
  • ibis Saint-Denis Stade Sud (Stade de France): A functional and well-located hotel, appreciated for its comfortable beds and proximity to the stadium. A reliable choice for a short stay.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Paris Saint-Denis (Plaine-Saint-Denis): An upscale hotel with a quiet atmosphere, near corporate headquarters and well-connected to Paris. The setting is more refined, with attentive service suited for business travelers and couples.

How to get there?

Saint-Denis is accessible via RER D or RER B from Paris Gare du Nord in under 10 minutes (tickets cost about 2.10 EUR / $2.30). You can also take metro line 13, though it is a slower route. From Charles-de-Gaulle airport, expect a 30-minute trip on the RER B.

Beyond the clichés

Contrary to the image the media tries to give us, there is not just misery and crime in Saint-Denis. There is an old city center with historical buildings, the basilica... The business district that has grown around the Stade de France is much better designed than the one at La Défense, and it is becoming more and more lively. There is also a market where you can find some great deals.
