Vincennes, a royal escape at the gates of Paris

The 170-foot keep towers over centuries-old trees. It is hard to believe that just a few subway stops from the Louvre, the tallest medieval fortress in Europe has stood intact since the 14th century. Diderot was imprisoned here, the Marquis de Sade lost a few illusions within these walls, and Saint Louis famously administered justice under an oak tree on the grounds.

Today, morning joggers weave past weekend families on the paths of the bois de Vincennes, while the town center offers a steady lineup of sidewalk bistros and Art Deco facades. This city of 50,000 residents balances dense historic heritage with a relaxed pace of life, all just 20 minutes from the Opéra Bastille.

An ideal getaway for those escaping the Parisian crush

Vincennes is a perfect fit for visitors who want to explore Paris while staying in a quieter, less expensive setting. The metro line 1, which terminates here, drops you in the heart of the capital in 15 minutes. Families will find a great playground with the zoo, the Parc Floral, and various play areas scattered throughout the woods. Medieval history buffs will be impressed by a castle that rivals any of the fortresses in the Loire Valley.

Keep in mind that if you are looking for late-night energy or major shopping malls, look elsewhere. Vincennes is an affluent residential city meant for recharging, not for partying until dawn. On weekends, the woods can get very crowded with Parisians seeking a bit of green space.

Controlled costs for the Paris region

Expect to pay between 70 and 120 EUR (about $75-$130) per night for a decent hotel, which is 20 to 30% less than in Paris intramuros for similar quality. A restaurant meal will cost between 15 and 35 EUR (about $16-$38) depending on the spot. Entry to the castle is 9.50 EUR (about $10), the zoo is around 20 EUR (about $22), and the Parc Floral is free from October to March.

The castle and its surroundings: 900 years of history within reach

A visit to the Château de Vincennes deserves a good half-day. The meticulously restored keep offers a glimpse into the daily lives of French kings before they moved to Versailles. The royal apartments have kept their original tile floors and monumental fireplaces. The Sainte-Chapelle, a cousin to the one in Paris, features remarkably delicate Renaissance stained glass. An augmented reality tablet, included with your ticket, lets you see the rooms as they appeared in the 15th century.

Friendly tip: Arrive at opening, around 10 a.m. School groups tend to flock here by midday. On the first Sunday of the month, entry is free from November to March, but be prepared for significant lines.

Exiting the castle, the avenue de Paris stretches toward the town center. 19th-century bourgeois facades sit alongside Art Deco buildings with elegant ironwork. The area has earned the "Ville et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" label for its collection of nearly 1,000 notable buildings. The église Saint-Louis, a massive 1924 neo-Byzantine construction, is surprising for its interior covered in gilded frescoes.

The bois de Vincennes: 2,450 acres of breathing room

The largest green space in Paris was once a royal hunting ground. Napoleon III transformed it into a public park with artificial lakes, lawns, and shaded paths. You can rent a bike by the hour near the esplanade du château or rent rowboats to navigate the lac des Minimes. Kids love the Ferme de Paris, which is free and allows them to see cows and sheep right in the middle of the city.

The Parc Floral and the Zoo

The Parc Floral spans 69 acres in the heart of the woods. Its botanical collections are worth the detour, especially in spring when the rhododendrons explode with color. In summer, the Paris Jazz Festival hosts free daytime concerts here. Families will enjoy the treetop adventure course and the mini-golf course featuring replicas of Paris monuments.

The Parc Zoologique de Paris, reopened in 2014 after a complete renovation, houses over 3,000 animals divided into five biozones. Its massive artificial rock is visible from a distance. Plan for at least three hours to see it without rushing.

The town center and its neighborhoods

The heart of Vincennes beats around the place Bérault and the rue du Midi, where shops and restaurants are concentrated. The Wednesday and Sunday morning market on the place Diderot attracts foodies with its artisan cheesemakers and high-quality produce. The atmosphere is that of a small provincial town, miles away from the Parisian hustle.

Each neighborhood has its own personality. Saint-Louis shows off its posh villas near the woods. Sorano vibrates to the rhythm of performances at the Cartoucherie, a complex of theaters installed in former military warehouses. Vignerons keeps the memory of the market gardens that once supplied the Halles de Paris.

Where to eat and drink in Vincennes?

The culinary scene in Vincennes focuses on variety. The Vietnamese restaurant Mây Bay, on rue des Laitières, offers refined vegetarian cuisine in a cozy setting. For a generous couscous, L'Olivier du Kef never disappoints. Fans of French bistronomy meet at Bo' or Quilles & Coquilles, two spots that handle seasonal products with care.

In the evening, the terraces of the avenue de Paris fill up as soon as the weather turns nice. For a glass of natural wine, the Bistrot Gueule à Vins is a local reference. On Sunday morning after the market, a coffee on a terrace at place Diderot is practically mandatory.

Where to sleep in Vincennes and the surrounding area?

The town center holds most of the lodging options. The Hôtel Daumesnil-Vincennes and the Best Western Saint Louis offer good value a few minutes' walk from the castle. For a tighter budget, the Royal Regency Paris Vincennes offers equipped studios with underground parking, which is ideal if you are arriving by car.

Neighboring towns are also worth considering. Saint-Mandé, tucked between Paris and Vincennes, has a few quiet addresses near the lake. Fontenay-sous-Bois and Nogent-sur-Marne offer lower-priced alternatives while remaining well-connected by the RER A train.

How to get to and around Vincennes?

From Paris, metro line 1 connects the Château de Vincennes station to the center of the capital in 25 minutes. The RER A serves the Vincennes station, which is convenient for reaching La Défense or Disneyland Paris. By car, count on about 15 minutes from the Périphérique ring road via the Porte de Vincennes or Porte Dorée exits.

For travelers coming from elsewhere in France or abroad, the Gare de Lyon and Gare de l'Est train stations are connected to metro line 1. From Charles de Gaulle Airport, take the RER B train and then switch to line 1 to arrive in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. From Orly, bus 183 goes to Porte de Choisy, where you can catch the metro.

Once you are there, cycling remains the best way to explore the woods. Vélib' bike-share stations are scattered everywhere. The town center is easily navigated on foot.

When to go?

Spring offers ideal conditions: the Parc Floral is in full bloom, temperatures are mild, and crowds remain reasonable. Summer draws masses into the woods, but the jazz and classical music festivals at the Parc Floral justify the attendance. Autumn dresses the woods in fiery colors. Avoid sunny Sundays if you are avoiding crowds, as all of Paris seems to meet there on those days.

A beautiful town near Paris

Right at the doorstep of the capital, Vincennes offers a peaceful and very pleasant setting that is less crowded with tourists. The downtown area has some lovely shops, good restaurants, and right next door, the Parc Floral de Paris and the bois de Vincennes offer some beautiful walks. Visiting the castle, which covers the history of the monument, is also a must. A good day is enough to see the town, the park, and the zoo. Unfortunately, when it comes to lodging, the town remains at Parisian price levels.
