Translated from French — Read the French original

Amsterdam is full of hidden gems off the beaten path. In this article, I’m sharing my 10 favorite spots to help you discover the city's unique side.

Amsterdam is one of the most enjoyable cities to visit in the world. Part of its charm is that there is no shortage of quirky, offbeat spots! It’s a city with so much to offer, from its picturesque canals and world-class museums to its incredibly vibrant nightlife.

On a personal note, I completely fell in love with the capital of the Netherlands, so much so that I actually moved here. I created my site to share my tips with fellow travelers and expats: Bonjouramsterdam.fr.

Getting back to the article you're reading, I’d like to invite you to discover this destination from a different angle, off the beaten path. Here are my 10 favorite hidden gems, or at least, the ones you shouldn't miss:

1 - Cuypers Library

Cuypers Library

If you love libraries, this is the oldest one in the country. You’ll find a vast collection of works across various subjects spread over several floors. It’s world-renowned and is actually housed within the grand building of the famous Rijksmuseum. What makes it truly unique is its design, it’s built vertically!

2 - Floor 17 Rooftop

Floor 17 Rooftop Terrace

If you’re a fan of great views, this bar offers an absolutely incredible panorama of the Dutch capital. The main idea is to enjoy a cocktail when the weather is warm, but you can also hit the ice rink in winter! They set it up during the coldest days so you can skate with friends or loved ones.

Address: Staalmeesterslaan 410, near Rembrandtpark

3 - The Icebar

Ice Bar

If you’re looking to grab a drink in a truly unusual setting, head to the Icebar, which will make you feel like you’ve landed at the North Pole. It’s about -10 degrees Celsius (14°F) inside, and the entire place is carved from ice. The decor is all about the chill, with blue lighting and cocktails served in ice glasses. The temperature stays very low, even if you visit in the middle of summer.

Don't worry, the bar provides warm gear like gloves if you aren't dressed for the cold.

5 - Torensluis Bridge

Torensluis

Torensluis is the oldest bridge in Amsterdam. It’s famous for the lion statues at each end. But what makes Torensluis truly unusual is that it also houses an underground prison. This jail was used in the 17th century to hold dangerous criminals who couldn't be kept in standard jails on land.

6 - The Begijnhof

The Begijnhof is a small, hidden courtyard garden located in the heart of Amsterdam. Long ago, this garden was a convent for the Beguines, a community of Catholic women who lived there in the 14th century.

Today, it’s a peaceful sanctuary where you can admire historic architecture and relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

7 - The Anne Frank House

A true Amsterdam classic, yet unique due to its content and the story of this young girl. The Anne Frank House is a museum located in the actual house where Anne Frank lived in hiding with her Jewish family during World War II.

This museum has become one of the most visited sites in the city, and the country, allowing visitors to learn about the history of Anne Frank and her family. More broadly, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the history of Jewish persecution during the war.

It’s one of the must-see museums in Amsterdam, which is saying a lot, given how famous the Dutch capital is for its museums.

Address: Westermarkt 20

8 - Amsterdam Flea Market

Flea Market

The flea market is a must-visit for shopping enthusiasts and treasure hunters, especially if you’re on a budget. Located in the famous Waterlooplein square, this market offers a huge variety of items, from vintage clothing and vinyl records to trinkets and secondhand furniture.

The Torture Museum is a small museum located in the Red Light District. It displays a collection of medieval torture instruments, such as the torture chair, the rack, and the guillotine. The museum also provides information on the history of torture and its political use in the Netherlands and around the world.

The theme is niche and the museum isn't for the faint of heart, but it’s a fascinating place to learn about the dark history of justice and the city itself.
