The Colosseum is an iconic Roman amphitheater in the center of Rome. Built in the 1st century AD, it held up to 80,000 spectators for gladiator bouts and animal hunts. Known for its stone arches and vaults, it remains Rome's top site, offering an immersive look at the Roman Empire.
The Trevi Fountain, located in the center of Rome, is among the world's most recognizable monuments. Designed in an exquisite Baroque style, it dominates the bustling square with its massive facade. The fountain features a central statue of Neptune flanked by intricate marine sculptures. Tossing a coin for luck remains a quintessential Rome experience.
Castel Sant'Angelo is a thousand-year-old monument in the Borgo neighborhood of Rome. Today, visitors can explore six floors, from the ancient Mausoleum of Hadrian and grim former prisons to papal apartments featuring frescoes by Perin del Vaga in the Hall of Apollo. The top level offers a walk along the ramparts with views of Rome.
The most significant ancient treasures are in the capital of Italy. Nestled between the Capitoline and Palatine hills, the Roman Forum is a primary example. This former urban hub hosted trade, justice, and politics. Excavated since the 19th century, these ruins reveal a millennium of history. From the Via Sacra (Sacred Way) to the ancient basilicas, the site remains a profound look at a lost world.
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore has anchored the Esquiline Hill since the 5th century. As the only papal basilica in Rome to retain its original early Christian structure, it houses some of the city’s oldest mosaics, a ceiling gilded with gold from the Americas, and the tomb of Pope Francis since 2025. Entry is free, but the museum and panoramic terraces require a ticket.
The Pantheon in Rome is an extraordinary ancient monument, famous for its massive dome and central oculus that lets in natural light. Built in the 2nd century under Hadrian, it became a church housing royal tombs and artists like Raphael. Located on Piazza della Rotonda, it sits near busy cafes, the Trevi Fountain, and the San Luigi dei Francesi church.
Dating to the 2nd century, the Catacombs of Domitilla are among the oldest and largest in Rome. They feature 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) of tunnels across four levels holding 150,000 burials. As the only catacombs with a subterranean basilica, they house 80 tombs featuring early Christian frescoes that document the faith of Rome's early believers.
Trajan's Forum stands as the largest and final imperial forum in Rome. This monumental complex, designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, showcases the power of the Roman Empire at its peak. Visitors can explore the remains of grand basilicas, the iconic column, and the ancient markets that once defined this historic center.
Built in 1583 as a papal summer residence on the highest hill in Rome, the Quirinal Palace has housed thirty popes and four kings of Italy. Since 1948, it has served as the official home of the Italian president. This 110,500 square meter site features opulent state rooms and 4-hectare gardens overlooking Rome.
This 1st-century marble mask sits under the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church in Rome. Medieval legend claims it bites the hands of liars. Made famous by the film Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn, it draws hundreds of visitors daily. Admission is free, but plan for patience as lines grow long in peak season.

The Colosseum might not be the most beautiful monument I have ever seen in my life, but it is without a doubt the most impressive. Its immense arches and grandiose appearance make you kind of forget its wear and tear. Inside, you can really get a sense of what gladiator fights and other spectacles must have been like during the Roman Empire.

Trajan's Forum is pretty well preserved and it really lets you imagine what it was like back in ancient times, especially with the columns. The visit is pretty quick because I found the site to be rather small. Take the opportunity to visit the Colosseum nearby, which is also worth a look.

Rome has so many religious monuments, but this basilica is an absolute must-see. It is truly magnificent both on the outside and the inside. It is richly decorated with gilding everywhere, and the ceilings are superb. I really recommend you visit it.

If it is impossible to visit every church in Rome, this one is truly a must-see! The immense building, with its beautiful Baroque facade and its surprising bell tower, really impressed me. Make sure to walk all the way around the monument to admire the domes. I recommend taking the time to go inside, because the interior decoration is sublime. I loved the coffered ceiling, covered in gold, the mosaics, and the Ionic columns. Pure wonder.

I am very torn because I have been there three times and each time I had to deal with the mass of tourists and ticket scalpers that flood the site. Without a guide, the visit is clearly useless because you do not have any information on site, and with a guide, it quickly becomes complicated to get around... I preferred admiring the Colosseum at night, which is lit by a soft light that gives it back its glow. The perfect moment to stroll with your partner and take some pretty photos of the site.

I go to Rome at least once a year and I have watched the Trevi Fountain go downhill year after year! Beyond the crowds that ruin any chance of enjoying it properly (it is almost impossible to take a photo without someone in it...), the area around it is just very dirty. Papers littering the ground, the street is really filthy, and there are barriers that, since last year, keep you from getting close enough to the fountain to throw your coin and make your wish. A highly touristy spot that has lost a lot of its charm and romance. I would recommend the Fountain of the Four Rivers on Piazza Navona instead!

If you are planning to visit Rome, you have probably checked the Trevi Fountain off your list of places you absolutely want to see. It is certainly beautiful, but even in the off-season, I find there are way too many people to really enjoy it. It is a real shame because the fountain (and the square where it is located) are very beautiful. I therefore do not recommend it, unless you can find the perfect time to go without being too bothered by other tourists.

An incredible atmosphere in this fortress, a very well preserved castle, very enriching for the history of Rome.
A cafe restaurant with a stunning view of Rome awaits you at the very top :)
