Visiting the Trevi Fountain

Ranked among the 10 most beautiful monuments in Rome and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, the Trevi Fountain is famous for its coin-filled basin and its legends. Tradition says that if you toss a coin into the water with your right hand over your left shoulder, you are guaranteed to return to the city, and it is said to bring good luck.

A symbol of the Dolce Vita

Internationally popularized by Fellini and his Dolce Vita, specifically the iconic scene where Anita Ekberg wades into the water, the sheer scale of the fountain is striking against the intricate detail of its figures. Sculpted in the 18th century by Niccolo Salvi and later decorated by artists from the school of Bernini, this baroque masterpiece sits on the piazza of the same name, built against the Palazzo Poli. Strategically located at the intersection of three major streets, the name Trevi comes from the Latin trevium, meaning three roads.

A tribute to Neptune and the Aqua Virgo aqueduct

Commissioned by Pope Clement XII to replace a much simpler structure, the fountain serves as a grand homage to the Aqua Virgo, the 6th aqueduct of Rome. Carved entirely from travertine stone, it is framed by four columns that highlight Neptune, the god of the ocean, driving a seashell chariot pulled by powerful sea horses. Beside him, allegorical figures representing abundance and health complete the scene.

A few anecdotes

The fountain is a magnet for visitors hoping to make a wish. Every week, authorities collect nearly 14,000 EUR (about $15,200) in coins from the basin, which is then donated to charity.

In 2015, the Italian luxury fashion house Fendi funded 2.5 million EUR (about $2.7 million) for a major restoration project. A year later, the brand held a lavish fashion show at the site. If you can, visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive or late at night, when the lighting highlights the architectural details.

Lost its romantic vibe!

I go to Rome at least once a year and I have watched the Trevi Fountain go downhill year after year! Beyond the crowds that ruin any chance of enjoying it properly (it is almost impossible to take a photo without someone in it...), the area around it is just very dirty. Papers littering the ground, the street is really filthy, and there are barriers that, since last year, keep you from getting close enough to the fountain to throw your coin and make your wish. A highly touristy spot that has lost a lot of its charm and romance. I would recommend the Fountain of the Four Rivers on Piazza Navona instead!

Yes it is beautiful, but...

If you are planning to visit Rome, you have probably checked the Trevi Fountain off your list of places you absolutely want to see. It is certainly beautiful, but even in the off-season, I find there are way too many people to really enjoy it. It is a real shame because the fountain (and the square where it is located) are very beautiful. I therefore do not recommend it, unless you can find the perfect time to go without being too bothered by other tourists.

Trevi Fountain, a must-see, my favorite despite the crowds

The Trevi Fountain, much smaller than the Colosseum, amazed me with its beauty and its details. Despite the crowd, the place gives off a real sense of magic. You have to elbow your way in to get close to it, but it is worth it. The surrounding narrow streets, full of life and tourists, add to the typically Roman charm of the neighborhood. A must-see that is worth the trip.

Gorgeous sculptures

The Trevi Fountain is one of the iconic sites in Rome. I remember being impressed by the sculptures. It is truly a beautiful artistic achievement. While it is a sight to see, it is also overrun by crowds. The experience can therefore turn out to be more disappointing than expected. If you have the chance, toss two coins into the fountain to make a wish!

Watch out for the crowds

A symbol of the city of Rome, the Trevi Fountain is one of the must-see spots during your visit. If possible, go early in the morning or late at night. It is a site that attracts a huge number of people. There is a dense crowd around the fountain that might keep you from getting close.

A magnificent sight

Fascinating by day, romantic and hypnotic at night, the Trevi Fountain is the most splendid in Rome, offering a true visual and auditory spectacle. The incredibly rich white marble composition and turquoise water jets can be admired endlessly. Following tradition, I made a wish by tossing a coin over my shoulder with my back to the fountain. It is pretty difficult to get close on the weekend because of the increased security. The experience is much more pleasant on a weekday late at night.

Very pretty fountain in a charming square

It is a bit of the opposite of the Colosseum, the square is not huge, the fountain neither, but the statues are superb and the little square where it is located is full of charm.

Pretty sculptures but way too crowded

Pretty fountain in a small square where it could be nice to sit for a moment, and why not take some pictures. Except that, fame being what it is, the edges of the fountain are constantly surrounded by people and it will be impossible to frame a photo with you and the fountain. Likewise, given the crowds, the place loses its romantic feel. A shame.

Monumental but super crowded

The Trevi Fountain, famous all over the world, should have everything to be the icon for lovers: located in the eternal city, in a small square surrounded by little shops and restaurants, monumental statues and scenery, a warm climate but refreshed by the cascading water (I am exaggerating a bit there :p )... But it is absolutely packed with people.

Even trying to take a couple photo without anyone else in the frame is complicated. Unless you do a very close-up shot, but in that case, you cannot see the fountain behind you.

That small complaint aside, the Trevi Fountain remains a must-see in Rome.
