Visiting the Maintower
Opened in 2000, the Maintower is a prominent fixture of the Frankfurt am Main skyline, constructed from concrete, glass, and steel. The structure rises 200 meters, or 240 meters if you include the antenna atop the roof, and spans 56 floors above ground with 5 levels below. It remains a rare spot in the city that welcomes the public to an observation deck, providing a vantage point over the urban landscape and the river that gives the tower its name, the Main. As a defining element of the Frankfurt am Main skyline, it sits right in the middle of the city's primary financial district.
A 360-degree view of Frankfurt am Main
Construction on the tower began in the late 1990s and wrapped up in 1999 based on designs by architect Peter Schweger. The panoramic observation deck allows you to see Frankfurt am Main from every angle. Informational panels and public-access binoculars help identify key landmarks and provide a fresh perspective on the city below. The Maintower currently stands as the fourth-tallest building in both Frankfurt am Main and Germany. You can rest easy knowing you will not have to climb the 1,090 stairs. High-speed elevators whisk you to the top in just a few seconds.
Culture, dining, and fitness in a modern skyscraper
Beyond the office space, you will find a restaurant with panoramic views located on the 53rd floor. The building also houses a fitness center. On the ground floor, there is a contemporary art collection known as Helaba, named for its patron, the investment bank Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen, which maintains its headquarters in the building and owns the pieces on display. Notable installations include a video project by artist Bill Viola and a massive mosaic titled Frankfurt Steps by Stephan Huber.
Opening hours
During the summer, the observation deck is open Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
In winter, it operates Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
The exhibition space is open daily on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
There are several types of greatness, and Frankfurt brings them all together. Not far from all those banks, the stroller first comes across two statues: one of Schiller and one of Goethe. Two great German writers, two great writers period. Two great figures that the size of the surrounding towers cannot crush.
The Maintower also lets you experience greatness. It is actually possible to go all the way to the top and enjoy an incredible view of the whole city. Binoculars are provided for visitors. A piece of advice: bundle up at least a little bit. If it is windy, you might catch a cold.
