A sacred islet between sea and legend
Where the Katase River empties into Sagami Bay, this small island measuring less than 2.5 miles in circumference packs in shrines, sea caves, and rooftop gardens. Administered as part of the city of Fujisawa, it serves as the tourism heart of the Shonan coastal region.
An island dedicated to a goddess
Legend holds that Enoshima emerged from the waves in the 6th century, shaped to shelter Benzaiten, the goddess of music and the arts. The Enoshima Shrine, spread across multiple levels, traces this spiritual history dating back nearly a millennium, with documentation recorded as early as 1047 in a Buddhist text.
Caves carved by the waves
The Iwaya Caves, sculpted by marine erosion, split into two galleries accessible with an admission ticket: the first reaches 502 feet in depth, while the second runs 184 feet. They once served as a training ground for Buddhist monks.
A British botanical legacy
At the top of the island, the Samuel Cocking Garden takes its name from a British merchant who developed a power plant and botanical greenhouses there in the 19th century. While those structures are gone, the garden endures, welcoming more than 500,000 visitors annually.
To skip the steep stairs climbing up to the garden, a system of three outdoor escalators called Luminous Way lets you ride up comfortably for a small extra fee.
Good for: shrine enthusiasts, casual hikers, and couples looking for a romantic spot.
Less ideal for: visitors with limited mobility, since getting around beyond the bridge and the shrine entrance gets challenging.
An Olympic sailing venue
The Enoshima harbor hosted the sailing events for the 1964 Olympic Games and again for the 2020 Games, cementing its long maritime history.
