Place de l'Horloge at a glance

Located within the city walls, in the heart of the historic papal city between the Palais des Papes and the rue de la République, the bustling Place de l'Horloge is a required stop for the 400,000 annual visitors to the capital of the Vaucluse. It also serves as a pleasant spot for a shaded break.

Serving as the original forum of Avenio, the ancient name for Avignon, the square became the place du Mazel during the Middle Ages. This name referenced the macelliers, or butchers, who set up shop there on market days, before it was eventually renamed place du Reloge. At the intersection of the rue Ferruce, look for the imposing historic building that houses the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall). This structure was formerly the Livrée d'Albano, an ancient abbey for the Benedictine nuns of Saint-Laurent that once hosted numerous cardinals. In 1471, a clock decorated with jacquemards, small wooden automatons that strike the hours with a bell, was installed here. Throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the square underwent several expansions. The current symmetrical layout is the work of architect Jean-Baptiste Franque. Among the notable buildings adorning the square, take note of the municipal theater, flanked by statues of Molière and Corneille, as well as the Banque de France. For logistics, you will find the local tourist office located here.

On the ground, you can see the city coat of arms rendered in an elegant mosaic. The two keys of the Pope, representing Saint Peter and the Church, sit alongside the key of the city, a vestige of the eagle of the Holy Roman Empire to which the residents were once deeply attached. Place de l'Horloge hosts numerous events throughout the year, such as the famous Festival in July, Millevin on the third Thursday of November, and a charming Christmas market that runs for three weeks each December.

A beautiful, lively, and friendly square

One of the most beautiful spots in Avignon (which already has so much charm), the Place de l'Horloge is a must-see. It is pretty and shaded, with plenty of cafes and restaurants that make for a welcome break while you admire the architecture. A little bonus, kids will love the huge carousel that sits right in the middle of the square. (I loved it myself when I was a little girl...) A quick tip, go check out the place during the festival! The atmosphere is absolutely worth it if you enjoy street performances :)

Lively and welcoming

A must-see spot when you arrive in town and head toward the Palais des Papes. I really enjoyed how lively and animated it is. The trees and greenery in the spring also provide some welcome shade. There are some really beautiful buildings like the theater, but also some very charming and authentic cafes. A perfect place to grab a bite to eat!

Place de l’Horloge, excitement guaranteed!

Place de l’Horloge is located a little bit below the Palais des Papes. This square reminds me a bit of Venice since it is a place where there is a lot going on. During my stay, there were performers putting on shows in the square. It gave me a bit of that feeling you get when you watch the Venice Carnival, with all the artists and the pedestrian-only space. I found this square really pretty, surrounded on one side by its imposing theater and on the other by the Banque de France building that is right nearby. It is a nice spot to grab a drink or a coffee on a sunny afternoon!
