Centre de la Vieille Charité à Marseille

Visiting the Centre de la Vieille Charité, an architectural gem in the heart of Le Panier

In the historic Le Panier neighborhood of Marseille, the Centre de la Vieille Charité offers a quiet cultural retreat. This remarkable 17th-century structure, originally built to house the city's poor, now serves as a dynamic cultural hub hosting museums, temporary exhibitions, and various performances.

A baroque masterpiece

Designed by architect Pierre Puget, the Centre de la Vieille Charité stands as a significant example of baroque architecture in Provence. Its imposing central chapel, topped with an elliptical white stone dome, immediately captures your attention. The complex, built with four wings of pink stone arranged around a vast courtyard, impresses visitors with its balance and restraint.

A stroll through this architectural landmark allows you to appreciate the fine details and harmonious proportions of the site.

Museums spanning diverse cultures

The Centre de la Vieille Charité now houses several major cultural institutions.

  • The Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne (Mediterranean Archaeology Museum) offers a broad overview of ancient civilizations from the Mediterranean basin, featuring notable collections of Egyptian and Greco-Roman artifacts.
  • The Musée d'Arts Africains, Océaniens et Amérindiens (Museum of African, Oceanian, and Amerindian Arts) showcases rare and precious pieces from continents often overlooked by the general public.

These museums, which charge entry fees around 3 to 6 EUR (about $3 to $7), feature rich permanent collections and frequently changing temporary exhibitions.

A hub for artistic life

Beyond its museums, the Centre de la Vieille Charité serves as a focal point for the arts in Marseille. It regularly hosts lectures, documentary film screenings, and dance and theater performances. Its pleasant café, located under the arcades, provides a relaxing setting to take a break between visits.

While wandering through the interior courtyard, you will often find students, artists, and travelers alike, all drawn by the peaceful beauty of the space.

Beautiful (and free) exhibits

I love the Vieille Charité. And the most incredible part is that you can get into the permanent exhibits for free. You will discover some superb objects related to ancient civilizations and Africa. My favorite exhibit is the one on ancient Egypt: it has some gorgeous sculptures, sarcophagi... There is an enormous amount to see. Plus, the place is located right near the beautiful Panier neighborhood!

La Vieille Charité, an icon of Le Panier

This beautiful building dates back to the 17th century, and it is right in the heart of Le Panier, the oldest neighborhood in Marseille. You can visit it, and in fact, it is now a museum and cultural center.
A bit of calm just a stone's throw from the Vieux-Port and the hustle and bustle of Marseille.
