Visiting the Old Port of Marseille

As the historic center and a living symbol of Marseille, the Old Port of Marseille is far more than a simple harbor. It is the soul of the city and the ideal starting point to explore its distinct character.

A harbor steeped in history

Since antiquity, the Old Port of Marseille has served as the link between the city and the Mediterranean. Founded by the Phocaeans 2,600 years ago, it has welcomed merchants, conquerors, and fishermen for millennia. Today, colorful fishing boats and modern sailboats share its calm waters, surrounded by active quays where the past and present collide. Its rectangular basin, framed by military forts and historic buildings, tells the story of centuries of maritime history.

Local atmosphere and walks

Strolling along the quays is the best way to immerse yourself in the authentic Marseille atmosphere. At dawn, the fish market sets up on the quai de la Fraternité (Brotherhood Quay), keeping an ancient tradition alive. Later in the day, cafe terraces fill with regulars and visitors alike, all there to watch the sunlight dance on the water.

Your walk can easily extend to the narrow streets of the Panier neighborhood or the terraces of the Fort Saint-Jean, both within walking distance. In the summer, the shade of the Ombrière, a massive mirrored canopy designed by Norman Foster, provides a bit of relief for pedestrians.

What to do around the Old Port of Marseille

The Old Port of Marseille serves as the departure point for several attractions, including ferries to the Château d'If, boats heading to the Calanques, and shuttles to the plage des Catalans (Catalans Beach). For history buffs, the museums in the surrounding area serve as an excellent complement to your visit.

In the evening, the subtle lighting reveals a different, calmer side of the port. It is the perfect time for a quiet stroll before heading to a local restaurant to try a traditional bouillabaisse. The site is open to the public year-round, allowing you to explore it at any time of day.

The heart of Marseille

This famous Old Port is without a doubt the heart of Marseille! Lively at all hours of the day, there is plenty to do to walk around, eat, or simply stroll along the main path. In summer, the small market is a must-see to browse or let yourself be tempted by a little souvenir. And for a bit more calm and contemplation, you can sit on the edge of the docks to watch the sea and its silver reflections.

A must-see in Marseille

The Old Port is a must-see when visiting Marseille.
I loved walking along the docks and checking out all the boats.

The atmosphere is very lively and you can really feel the soul of the city.
In the summer, it makes sense, it is super crowded.

Nearby, the Prado beaches and the Plage des Catalans are also very nice for swimming or relaxing.

The most beautiful place in Marseille!

The Old Port of Marseille is a must-see. While I didn't really enjoy the rest of the city, this port is very charming, with its shops and friendly atmosphere. Grabbing a drink on a terrace around 6 p.m. is especially nice. If you like the view of the boats, this place is for you!

A lovely, very lively setting

It is the perfect place for a stroll. You can find souvenir shops, good restaurants, and sometimes little concerts there. I recommend going early in the morning to see the fish market, or in the early evening to have a drink on a terrace. The port offers a pretty view of the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica. It is also where you can find boats to the Chateau d'If, but unfortunately, I did not have the time to do it.

Iconic spot

This is clearly a spot you cannot miss during a stay in Marseille. Walking around on foot is very pleasant, and despite all the activity, you do not feel overwhelmed. I highly recommend coming in the morning to check out the fish market. It is a real immersion into Marseille life.
Personally, I went to the flower market on Saturday morning, and it was a really cool experience!

A must-do walk

The Old Port of Marseille is the place to be. Early in the morning, you will see the fish market, the shellfish stalls, and more. At lunch or dinner, you can eat at a waterfront restaurant and try the traditional bouillabaisse. In the afternoon, take a walk from Fort Saint-Jean to Fort Saint-Nicolas. You will walk right along the Mucem. Go check out the view from its free footbridge.

The heart of Marseille

The Old Port is the place you have to go when you arrive in Marseille. You can park just a stone's throw away, or take the subway to get there, but you absolutely have to grab a coffee with a view of the Bonne Mère and the boats. It is swarming with people and street performers, a huge port right in the city center where you really feel good.

The sea and the boats

The Old Port smells like the sea and boats. It is a really beautiful place to walk around and a must-see. Anyway, you will definitely go there if you plan to visit the iconic spots in Marseille. It is a bit crowded near the mirror shade, but the rest of the promenade is very pleasant. The many restaurants and bars make it a lively and vibrant place.
