Lombard Street à San Francisco

Visiting Lombard Street, the Most Famous Switchback in San Francisco

The sound here is not that of a typical street. It is a mix of camera clicks, multilingual exclamations, and the slow crunch of tires on red brick. Lombard Street is not just a thoroughfare. It is a choreographed curiosity, an urban spectacle where cars become actors in a slow-motion ballet on one of the most famous hills in the city.

Why is this street so winding?

This iconic stretch of Lombard Street, located on Russian Hill, is an ingenious solution to a classic San Francisco problem: a dizzying incline. In the 1920s, the hill was simply too steep (27 degrees) for most vehicles of the era to climb or descend safely. A local resident suggested creating a series of switchbacks to reduce the grade.

The result is what you see today: eight sharp turns over a distance of barely 180 meters (about 590 feet), lined with upscale homes and meticulously maintained flower beds. It is a masterpiece of civil engineering that became, almost by accident, a world-renowned attraction.

The experience: driving or walking?

There are two radically different ways to approach Lombard Street, and each has its own charm. Driving down it is a rite of passage for many visitors. It is a slow, almost ceremonial experience where you navigate at 5 miles per hour (8 km/h) under the amused gaze of pedestrians capturing your photo.

However, exploring on foot offers a much richer perspective. Stairs line both sides of the street, allowing you to stop, admire the architecture of the homes, smell the blooming hydrangeas, and take the time to frame the perfect shot. It is on foot that you truly grasp the charming absurdity of the place.

Pro tip: the most iconic way to arrive is to take the Powell-Hyde Cable Car line, which stops right at the top of the winding section. Then, do not just look from the top or the bottom. Walk the lateral stairs to capture the turns from their best angles.

A vertical garden with a view

Beyond the turns, it is the aesthetics of the place that draw you in. The flower beds that snake between the brick switchbacks are impeccably maintained and change color throughout the seasons, offering a burst of vibrant hues, especially in the spring and summer. These lush gardens transform a simple street into a work of landscape art.

Do not forget to turn around once you are at the top. The panorama before you is impressive. The plunging view frames the Coit Tower, a portion of the San Francisco Bay, and Alcatraz island in the distance. It is a constant reminder that this eccentric street is an integral part of a much larger urban landscape.

Just a zig-zag road

This is the most famous street in San Francisco. I had seen it everywhere. Still, I was disappointed. The vegetation, which was quite tall during my visit in June, kept me from admiring the perspective from both the top and the bottom, and in the middle of the hill, you just watch vehicles taking turns that seemed a lot tighter in the movies than in reality. It is fun to see, but nothing more, especially when tour groups show up. The street might be more interesting to drive down, but I did not try it.

A super fun street

You have probably already seen photos of this steep, zigzagging street in San Francisco. The brave ones will have fun driving down it. For my part, I opted for walking, which lets you take some really funny photos of the drivers clenching their teeth in the hairpin turns.
Just know that, in general, walking in San Francisco is not exactly easy because those hills are no joke!
