Biodola Beach stretches for nearly 700 meters of golden sand within a sheltered gulf on the northern coast of Elba. Framed by Mediterranean scrub and views of Monte Capanne, its gentle slope and turquoise water make it a top spot. It offers full amenities and access to two neighboring beaches.

Perfect for families and watersports enthusiasts, it is best to arrive before 10 am in high season, or visit in September to experience the beach at its most peaceful.

Capoliveri, the hilltop village overlooking the sea

Perched on a hill 400 meters above the shore, Capoliveri commands the southern tip of the Island of Elba with a quiet confidence. In the evening, when the narrow streets cool down from the day's heat, shutters swing open and the scent of grilled basil drifts between the ochre houses. You hear the clatter of silverware on tables before you even spot the restaurant terraces.

Is this destination right for you?

Do you enjoy wandering without a fixed plan, getting lost in winding cobblestone alleys that slope up and down, and finishing your evening at a table with a view of the Gulf of Stella? You will love Capoliveri. The village retains an authentic Italian feel, far removed from the gloss of neighboring resort towns.

On the other hand, if you are looking for intense nightlife or beaches you can reach in ten minutes on foot from downtown, be prepared to drive. The village sits high up on the ridge, while the beaches are down below.

Best suited for:

  • hiking and diving enthusiasts
  • couples looking for romantic dinners with a view
  • travelers who enjoy strolling through a village without heavy car traffic

Not recommended for:

  • those who want a beach steps from where they are staying
  • travelers without a vehicle who dislike walking
  • partygoers looking for a bustling nightlife scene

A budget that stays reasonable outside peak season

Indicative daily budget in Capoliveri per person
Expense Range
Night in a guesthouse or B&B 50 to 80 €
Night in a comfortable hotel with sea view 120 to 200 €
Quick bite (panino, focaccia) 6 to 10 €
Restaurant meal with fresh fish 25 to 40 €
Car or scooter rental per day 30 to 50 €

Indicative rates subject to change, significantly higher in July and August.

Practical realities to know before you go

Life on the Island of Elba runs on the schedule of the ferries, which depart mainly from Piombino on the mainland. In peak season, ferry crossings and island roads get heavily congested, especially around August 15. Off-season, the atmosphere shifts completely as many shops and restaurants close between November and March.

Italian is the primary language spoken. English remains limited outside the most tourist-heavy spots, but the welcome is warm and hand gestures usually bridge any gap.

The old village and its star-shaped alleys

Capoliveri's historic center fans out around Piazza Matteotti, the main square where bars and outdoor tables gather. The alleys carry the names of long-gone trades and climb narrow staircases up to unexpected little public squares.

Friendly tip: come around 7pm, just as the low light brushes the building facades and locals head out for pre-dinner drinks. It is the best time to soak in neighborhood life before the evening diners arrive.

San Michele Arcangelo Church

Simple in its architecture, the parish church occupies the highest point in the village. Its small terrace offers an open view across the surrounding hills and, on a clear day, all the way to the mainland coast.

The southern beaches, a drive down the hill

Capoliveri does not have a beach right at its doorstep, but its surrounding coastlines count among the most striking bays on Elba.

Fetovaia Beach and Norsi

About fifteen minutes away by car, these fine sand beaches bordered by turquoise water contrast sharply with the pink granite of the surrounding headlands. They fill up quickly in the summer, so arriving early is a must.

The Gulf of Stella

Wilder and reached via a partially unpaved access road, this cove appeals to travelers seeking peace and quiet. The water here is exceptionally clear, making it a favorite for divers exploring the rocky sea beds nearby.

Hiking and nature around the old mine

The areas surrounding Capoliveri still show the marks of the mining industry that shaped the island for centuries. Marked trails cross through old iron quarries, providing a stark mineral contrast against the surrounding Mediterranean scrub.

Where to eat and drink in Capoliveri?

Local cooking highlights fresh seafood and flavors from the hills. Look out for schiaccia briaca, a traditional island cake made with raisins and liqueur, commonly served at the end of the meal in downtown trattorias.

Local white wines, particularly Elba Bianco, pair well with the fish dishes served on the village terraces at sunset.

Where to stay in Capoliveri and nearby?

The village center mostly features guesthouses and small boutique hotels overlooking the rooftops or the distant sea. For greater comfort and direct beach access, hotels located near Lacona or the Gulf of Stella offer a solid balance between nature and amenities.

How to get to Capoliveri?

The Island of Elba is served by ferries from Piombino, taking about an hour for the crossing. Direct flights also run from several European cities to the island's airport, which is useful in peak season to skip the crowded ferry crossings.

How to get around Capoliveri?

Inside the village, everything is done on foot since the narrow streets are generally closed to car traffic. To reach the surrounding beaches, however, a car or scooter is essential because public transit options are limited outside the summer season.

When to go?

Spring (May-June) and early fall (September) offer the ideal balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. July and August are best avoided if you dislike crowds and inflated prices.

Hilltop village

An extremely charming little village. Between the sea, mines, mountains, and history, you will have plenty of choices. I really loved the medieval streets in the center and the contrast with the mines, where you feel like you are in an urban exploration setting. As for the food, you will be well taken care of too!

A nice bonus: in the summer, free shuttles are at your disposal.
