Plage de Biodola

Biodola, the Elba Island beach that holds its own

The sand at Biodola is not your typical grit. Made of quartz and mica, it catches the late afternoon light and glitters like gold dust. The water in front of it shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt within just a few yards, creating a color gradient that looks almost like a hand-painted backdrop.

Why visit Biodola Beach?

On the northern coast of Elba, halfway between Portoferraio and Procchio, the Gulf of Biodola forms a natural amphitheater. The terrain of Serone delle Cime, Capannone, and Colle Pecorara is covered in dense Mediterranean scrub, wrapping around the site on three sides. This geography isolates the bay from the outside world with impressive efficiency.

The gulf remains protected from southerly winds, ensuring calm water for most of the season. In the background, the silhouettes of Monte Capanne and Monte Perone, the island's two highest peaks, frame the inland horizon.

Beach life: between freedom and amenities

Biodola stretches for about 600 to 750 meters depending on the tide. The floor slopes so gradually that you can wade out for nearly 30 meters and still keep your footing, making it one of the few beaches on the island well-suited for families with young children.

The beach is split into sections, with a free public area and private zones offering rental loungers and umbrellas. The services are comprehensive:

  • Diving center and organized snorkeling in the bay
  • Boat, pedal boat, and kayak rentals
  • Windsurfing and sailing school
  • Restaurants, beach bar, and hot showers
  • Children's play area
  • Live music during the season

Local tip: The beachside parking lot fills up by 10 am in July and August. Take the city bus from Portoferraio. It drops you right at Biodola, saves you the headache of parking, and the winding road offers views of the bay that make the trip worthwhile.

Scaglieri and Forno, the overlooked neighbors

A path through the rocks at the end of Biodola leads to Scaglieri Beach in just a few minutes. At about 100 meters long, it is a favorite for surfers and kayakers. In the other direction, Forno is a discreet, much quieter cove that also faces the gulf. It offers the same scenery with fewer crowds.

Sunset at Biodola

The west-northwest orientation of the bay creates sunsets that linger well into autumn. Guests at the Hotel Biodola, which recently completed a full renovation, often stay on the terrace until the sky turns red. It is one of those displays that you do not expect to be as impactful as it is, but it leaves a lasting impression.

Why we like Biodola

  • Fine-grain golden sand and a very gentle slope, perfect for kids
  • Intact natural setting with scrub reaching the water and views of the island peaks
  • Full service amenities without sacrificing off-season peace
  • Access to three distinct beaches from one spot
  • Some of the best sunsets on the island

Things to keep in mind

  • Very crowded in July and August, so arrive early or visit in September
  • Limited parking that often hits capacity in high season
  • The private hotel section occupies a portion of the beach

Looks nice on paper, but way too crowded

So yes, the place is a paradise, with fine sand and a beautiful natural bay. Plus, there is no shortage of water activities to do with the family. On the other hand, I do not recommend going in August. Or, if you do, you really need to arrive early, have a picnic, and leave. Sometimes you see cars parked along the side of the road just to get there. Not exactly the most convenient!
