What to know about Cala del Gesso, the paradise at the end of the trail
Your first look comes from the heights of the coastal road. Below, a perfect cove reveals water shifting from turquoise to deep sapphire, framed by a beach of brilliant white pebbles. Cala del Gesso is not just a beach. It is a promise and a reward shimmering at the base of a lush cliff.
Why is Cala del Gesso so sought after?
It is frequently cited as the most beautiful cove in Monte Argentario, and for good reason. It represents the essence of the peninsula coastline, featuring wild nature, restricted access that preserves its privacy, and a raw beauty that leaves you speechless. You do not end up here by accident. You choose to come here, and that effort makes the experience feel precious.
Its relative isolation ensures exceptionally clear water, sheltered from the heavy crowds found at more accessible beaches. It is a refuge for those seeking a more intense connection with the sea and the landscape.
A wild postcard setting
The cove acts as a dramatic natural amphitheater. The beach, a carpet of small pebbles polished by the waves, plunges into crystalline water. Directly offshore, the isolotto dell'Argentarola (Argentarola islet), a rocky outcrop, seems to watch over the bay, adding a touch of mystery to the panorama.
Overlooking the cove on its right side, the ruins of a 16th century Spanish watchtower, the Torre di Cala del Gesso (Cala del Gesso Tower), complete the picture. It serves as a reminder of the era when this coast was under constant surveillance to protect against sea invasions.
A natural aquarium for snorkeling
Put on a mask and snorkel, and the show continues under the surface. The water clarity is such that you feel like you are floating in an aquarium. The seabed, a mix of posidonia seagrass and rocky formations, hosts abundant marine life. It is common to swim among schools of sargo and saddled seabream in a silence broken only by the sound of your own breathing.
Access: the effort before the reward
Let us be honest. Reaching Cala del Gesso requires effort. After finding a parking spot along the Via Panoramica (Panoramic Road), a gate marks the start of the descent. A very steep paved path followed by a dirt trail of about 700 meters stands between you and paradise. The walk down builds anticipation, but the walk back up is a genuine workout, especially in the heat of the afternoon.
Pro tip: Head out as early as possible in the morning. You will find it easier to park, you will descend in the cool air, and you will enjoy the beach before the crowds arrive. Wear real sneakers and leave the flip-flops behind. Bring absolutely everything you need, including plenty of water, a picnic, and a beach umbrella, because there is no shade, no bar, and no services of any kind on site.
While it is not huge, it is one of the larger coves in Monte Argentario, with an actual (pebble) beach. Make sure to bring water shoes so you can walk on the stones without hurting your feet.
I really like this place.
