Porto Ercole

Visiting Porto Ercole, the soul of a village within fortified walls

Step away from the bustle of the harbor and pass through an ancient gate to feel the pace of life shift. Porto Ercole is more than just a marina. It is a dual village, with a historic heart beating behind centuries-old walls, overlooking the sea with a timeless grace.

Why is the charm of Porto Ercole unique?

This village, ranked among the most beautiful in Italy, attracts visitors with its understated elegance. It offers a fascinating contrast. Down below, a chic port where designer boutiques sit alongside trendy sidewalk cafes. Up above, a maze of cobblestone alleys, vaulted passages, and stone houses that tell tales of history spanning hundreds of years.

This contrast is what makes the place special. You come for the easygoing lifestyle of a Mediterranean port, but you stay for the haunting atmosphere of the old town, a place heavy with stories where the shadow of the painter Caravaggio still lingers.

Getting lost in the Borgo Antico

Passing through the Porta Pisana (Pisan Gate) feels like entering another world. The old village clings to the hillside, a tangled web of vicoli (alleyways) and steep staircases. Every corner reveals a new perspective. A flower-filled window, a hidden square, or a plunging view of the deep blue bay.

Climb up to the church of Sant'Erasmo, the highest point in the village. From there, the panorama over the ocher roofs and the port below is your reward. This is a place to explore on foot, taking the time to feel the cool stone walls and listen to the silence barely disturbed by the echo of footsteps.

Insider tip: Save your exploration of the old village for the late afternoon. The golden light hitting the old stones is magic, and you will head back down just in time to grab a seat on the quay and enjoy an aperitivo while the boats sway gently.

The Spanish fortresses, guardians of the bay

Porto Ercole is ringed by an impressive defense system built in the 16th century during the Stato dei Presidi (State of the Presidios). These forts are not just military relics, they are also incredible viewpoints.

  • La Rocca: This massive fortress dominates the Borgo Antico and the port. It is the heart of the defensive system and its silhouette is inseparable from the Porto Ercole landscape.
  • Forte Filippo and Forte Stella: Located on neighboring promontories, these two forts completed the protection of the bay. The Forte Stella, with its characteristic star-shaped layout, is particularly photogenic and offers spectacular views of the coast.

In the footsteps of Caravaggio

The destiny of Porto Ercole is intimately linked to the tragic and mysterious end of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It was here, in 1610, that the troubled painter, on the run and hoping for a papal pardon, is said to have died of exhaustion and fever on a nearby beach.

Even if the exact circumstances of his death remain debated, his bones, identified a few years ago, now rest in the small village cemetery. A stele pays tribute to him, adding a sense of artistic pilgrimage to a visit to this place already so rich in history.
