Visiting the Palazzo dei Governatori
Tucked away in the Citadel district of Bastia is a museum that serves as a repository for the local history. It is a place that holds a significant piece of the island's memory.
History
In the 14th century, Corsica was under Genoese rule. The governor at the time, Leonello Lomellini, decided to build a fortified site on a rocky promontory. This provided a secure location for trade and a defensible position in case of attack. This fortification was named Castello della bastia. The citadel became the nucleus of the town and gave it its name.
Within 15 years, the citadel was captured, liberated, and captured again, until the Genoese army finally reclaimed and secured it in 1437, holding it until the French conquest.
A series of construction projects began in 1476. These modifications and expansions continued until 1710, when the small bell tower on the south facade was completed.
By 1495, this modest fortification had become the official residence of the governor. It served as their permanent home while also housing the local court of justice, a barracks, and several chapels. Additionally, the basement levels contained notoriously inhospitable dungeons.
Following the French annexation in 1768, the site was largely abandoned until 1794, when it was repurposed as military barracks.
During the war, the building was occupied by German forces. Upon their departure, they destroyed the north and west wings.
The Palazzo dei Governatori today
The site offers an exceptional vantage point over the city. From its garden, you have a 360 degree view of Bastia, its ports, its docks, and the surrounding hills.
It also functions as a museum that preserves the history of the city and its residents. Walking through the exhibits allows you to trace the narrative of this city.
An imposing building that might seem pretty plain at first glance. I really felt its former military function. However, it is worth the trip to discover the history of the city. Definitely don't miss the museum!
I also recommend walking through the garden. You will then have a magnificent view of the sea. Don't just stop at the outside, as this is a place that holds plenty of surprises!
