What to know about Saleccia Beach, the white jewel of the Agriates Desert

Some locations have a beauty that feels surreal, almost provocative. Saleccia Beach is one of those places. Imagine over a kilometer of pearly-white sand, lapped by water so clear it turns turquoise under the Corsican sun. This sight is not handed out to just anyone. It is hidden in the heart of the Agriates Desert and requires effort to reach, which makes it feel all the more rewarding.

Why is Saleccia Beach a Corsican legend?

Saleccia is not just a beach, it is the payoff at the end of an adventure. Completely cut off from the standard road network, it has remained shielded from development. This isolation has preserved its wild character and unique ecosystem, including the Aleppo pine forest that edges the dunes. It is the contrast between the arid maquis of the Agriates, the lush forest, and the blue lagoon that creates such a distinct atmosphere.

The expedition to reach paradise

Getting to Saleccia is an integral part of the experience. Forget your rental car, as the 12-kilometer dirt track leading there from Casta is a mess of earth and rock reserved for true 4x4 vehicles. This option, while bumpy, provides an immersive dive into the rocky landscapes of the desert. The alternative, which is smoother and just as spectacular, is approaching by sea.

Boat shuttles from Saint-Florent

Boarding a boat in the port of Saint-Florent is the most popular way to reach Saleccia. The roughly 30-minute crossing offers clear views of the gulf and the wild Agriates coastline. Several companies offer regular rotations, allowing you to spend the day on the beach and return in the late afternoon, your eyes still dazzled by the blue of the water.

A film set and some unexpected locals

This beach has not only charmed travelers. In 1961, it was chosen to stand in for the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day landings in the cult film The Longest Day. But the most famous stars of Saleccia are undoubtedly its cows. It is not rare to see cattle lounging on the warm sand, creating a surreal scene and unforgettable photos. They are part of the local lore, wandering freely between the brush and the shoreline.

Insider tip: For a more intimate experience, combine your visit to Saleccia with a trip to its neighbor, Lotu Beach. Take a shuttle to Lotu in the morning, then follow the coastal path (about a 1 hour and 15 minute easy walk) to Saleccia. You will enjoy two different environments and magnificent coastal panoramas, far from the midday arrival of the large shuttle boats.

Accessible by 4x4!

Saleccia Beach is a bit unique, since you cannot get there directly with most vehicles. It is only accessible by 4x4 or by boat. It is the perfect opportunity to plan a day trip. It is a place that you really have to earn, for sure. But it is worth it, I guarantee you! Between the white sand and the crystal clear water... I really want to go back!
