Visiting Ventimiglia, a border stop between Italy and France

A city at the crossroads of two cultures

Located just a few miles from the French border, Ventimiglia is the first Italian town you hit when traveling from Menton. It offers a blend of Italian and French influences, with a lively center, well-known markets, and a charming old town. Ventimiglia is not a major tourist hub, but it appeals to those who value an authentic atmosphere and proximity to both the sea and the mountains.

What to see in Ventimiglia

The historic center, perched on a hill, is one of the main draws. It houses the Cathedral of the Assumption, an 11th-century Romanesque building, along with the adjacent octagonal baptistery. Wandering through the cobblestone alleys reveals a subtle but interesting heritage. Down below, the waterfront is set up for strolling and offers a few beaches, though these are largely made of pebbles, much like the coast in Nice.

In the immediate vicinity, the Hanbury Gardens are a pleasant visit for botany enthusiasts. Situated a few miles west of the city, these 19th-century gardens offer a collection of exotic plants and a view of the Mediterranean.

The Ventimiglia market: a weekly ritual

The Ventimiglia market, held every Friday on the waterfront, attracts many visitors from the French Riviera. You will find everything from clothing and leather goods to local food products. Use your best judgment, as some stalls sell items of questionable quality. For a more authentic experience, head to the covered market, which is open all week, where you can buy fresh produce directly from local farmers.

Local gastronomy: what to eat in Ventimiglia

The Ligurian cuisine of Ventimiglia is defined by olive oil, basil, and seafood. Among the local specialties, you will find focaccia, a soft flatbread often topped with herbs, onions, or olives. Farinata, a savory pancake made from chickpea flour, is also popular.

For a more substantial meal, try the pesto pasta or ravioli stuffed with borage. For dessert, amaretti, small almond cookies, are a classic.

When to go

The Mediterranean climate of Ventimiglia makes it a year-round destination, but the most pleasant periods are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and crowds are thinner. In summer, the city is busier, especially on market days. If you are looking for a unique event, the Battle of Flowers, a floral parade held in February, is worth checking out.

How to get there

From France, Ventimiglia is accessible by train from Nice in about 40 minutes for roughly 5 EUR (about $5.50). By car, take the A8 motorway and exit at Menton, then follow the coastal road. For those arriving from further away, the nearest airport is Nice, located about 25 miles away. Regional trains make it easy to reach Ventimiglia from major towns in the region.

Covered market and waterfront

Ventimiglia surprised me with its ideal location right by the sea, just a few steps from the French border. I really loved strolling through its covered market, which is so rich in colors and scents, with stalls overflowing with fruits, vegetables, and delicious Italian cheeses.
The waterfront offers beautiful walks, and it feels safe thanks to the pedestrian and bike paths. A perfect spot to enjoy the mild Mediterranean air in total peace.
