Visiting the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, an immersion into the deep sea

A historic institution dedicated to science

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, functions as far more than a standard museum or aquarium. Led by the legendary Commandant Cousteau between 1957 and 1988, this venue merges history with science, focused entirely on ocean exploration and conservation. The building itself is an architectural masterwork, perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, serving as a symbol of Monaco and its commitment to marine ecosystem protection. Through its collection of rare specimens and rotating thematic exhibits, the museum chronicles the history of maritime expeditions and oceanographic research.

A spectacular aquarium

The clear highlight of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is its aquarium, housing more than 6,000 marine specimens. You can walk through carefully recreated marine environments, ranging from vibrant coral reefs to the mysterious depths of the abyss. The tanks support a wide variety of species, including sharks, rays, jellyfish, and a vast array of tropical fish. The aquarium provides a genuine look into the deep sea, allowing you to observe the beauty and complexity of underwater life up close.

An interactive experience for all

The museum goes beyond static displays by offering interactive activities for all ages. Educational workshops allow children to learn about marine life through hands-on play, while lectures and expert meet-and-greets offer adults perspectives on current environmental challenges.

Finally, the panoramic terrace of the museum, with its unobstructed views of Monaco and the Mediterranean, provides an ideal spot to unwind after your visit.

Guaranteed to amaze

The aquarium was one of the attractions that pushed me to visit Monaco! And I loved it! It really deserves its reputation and is absolutely spectacular. First off, the building and the decor are incredible.

Then the tanks are vast and deep, with a lot of species. You really get the feeling of being under the sea. I had a great time!

A must-see visit on the Rock!

Magnificent building, right in the center of the Rock, at the very top of Monaco. An absolute must-visit, the architecture and the location facing the sea really show off this oceanographic museum. Some very beautiful antique pieces in addition to the fish. For all sea lovers!

Impressive aquarium in a spectacular building

Having grown up devouring every Jacques Cousteau documentary on TV (I know, I am showing my age here, since he is a figure that young people today probably do not even know!), I was really curious to visit this place that he directed for many years.
First of all, the building itself is worth admiring. It is a large, imposing structure built on a cliff overlooking the sea.
The interior is really interesting, with some beautiful tropical aquariums and large tanks with fish of all sizes, including sharks.
A great memory.
