Visiting Beaune, the heart of Burgundy
Hospices de Beaune: an architectural and historical landmark
The Hospices de Beaune, or Hôtel-Dieu, is the most recognizable site in town. Founded in 1443, this former hospital is famous for its multicolored glazed tile roof. Now serving as a museum, it offers a look into the medical and social history of the Middle Ages, with an impressive display of period rooms and original furnishings.
Wine heritage and the cellars of Beaune
As the capital of Burgundy wines, Beaune is surrounded by prestigious vineyards. Many cellars, such as those at Patriarche or Joseph Drouhin, open their doors to visitors for tastings and tours. A drive along the Route des Grands Crus, which winds through the surrounding wine villages, provides a better sense of the scale of the region's viticultural history.
Collégiale Notre-Dame: a building steeped in history
Located in the center of Beaune, the Collégiale Notre-Dame is a 13th-century Gothic church worth visiting for its architecture and 15th-century tapestries. These tapestries, which depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, are considered national treasures.
The ramparts and the old town
Beaune still retains a portion of the medieval ramparts that once enclosed the historic center. A walk along these fortifications offers an overview of the town and its cobblestone alleys. The charm of the old town also lies in its small squares, historic houses, and local artisan shops.
When to go?
The best times to visit Beaune are in the spring and autumn, when the surrounding vineyards are particularly scenic. In November, the Vente des Vins des Hospices de Beaune attracts wine enthusiasts from all over the world. Summer is pleasant for exploring the region, though it is more crowded.
How to get there?
Beaune is easily accessible by train from Paris or Lyon, with travel times of about 2.5 hours and 1.5 hours respectively. Fares typically range from 30 to 60 EUR (about $32 to $65) depending on the class and how far in advance you book. If you are driving, the city is located right on the A6 highway, making it an ideal stop for a road trip through Burgundy.
Located in the heart of the famous Burgundy vineyards, Beaune is a town dedicated to epicureans! I loved the shops and the market, which are perfect for tasting (and bringing back) great local products. To make things even better, this city of Art is home to the famous Hospices, an architectural jewel with a remarkable history. As a bonus, the Route du vignoble de la Côte starts right from Beaune...
