Le Crotoy, where the North meets the South
It is 6:30 a.m. The sand is still damp, and hundreds of birds take flight into a sky hovering between soft pink and pearl gray. In the distance, a seal pokes its head out of the water, curious, before diving back toward its morning catch. This is Le Crotoy: a Picardy seaside town that has held onto the soul of a fishing village, where Jules Verne once wrote 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and where Impressionist painters set up their easels to capture a light that feels entirely unique.
A destination for those who love raw nature
If you are looking for standard beach boardwalk entertainment, keep moving. Le Crotoy is for those who appreciate the silence of a bay at low tide, the spectacle of harbor seals lounging on sandbars, and sunsets that set the horizon on fire. It is the only beach in northern France with a southern exposure, which gives it a surprising warmth for this latitude. Think of it as having the coastal orientation of a beach in the Pacific Northwest, just with much shallower water.
Families with children find it ideal, as the beach remains very shallow for hundreds of yards at low tide. Birdwatchers are in their element with more than 300 species recorded here. However, if you are looking for trendy boutiques or a high-energy nightlife scene, this is clearly not the place for you.
A reasonable budget for the region
Expect to pay between 80€ and 150€ ($85, $160) per night for a decent place to stay, with bed and breakfasts often offering the best value. A seafood meal at a port-side restaurant runs 25-35€ ($27, $38) per person. Signature activities like guided crossings of the bay cost around 15€ ($16) per adult.
The bay and its inhabitants: seals, birds, and salt meadows
The Baie de Somme, a designated Grand Site de France, is the true natural crown jewel of Le Crotoy. At low tide, the estuary turns into a vast expanse of sand reflecting the sky. This is when the seals come to lounge on the exposed sandbars. Two species coexist here: the harbor seal, smaller and sedentary, and the gray seal, recognizable by its elongated snout.
To observe them without disturbing them, opt for a trip by canoe or kayak departing from the harbor. These quiet vessels allow you to approach the largest colony of seals in France respectfully. Outings with a local nature guide are worth every penny: they know the resting spots, the tide schedules, and will even let you taste samphire freshly picked from the shore.
Friend's tip: seals are visible all year round, but the females give birth in June and July. If you want to see the white-coated pups, this is the ideal time. Bring binoculars, as regulations require a minimum distance of 300 meters.
The village and its quiet heritage
The narrow streets of the town center mix fisherman cottages with colorful facades and 19th-century bourgeois villas. Jacques Guerlain, the famous perfumer, was instrumental in introducing this resort to Parisians during the Belle Époque. His villa and those of his artist friends still dot the waterfront.
On the quai Courbet, a few sauterelliers are still moored, the traditional small boats used for gray shrimp fishing. The market, held on Tuesday and Friday mornings in summer, remains the best place to buy fresh gray shrimp, cockles, and sea vegetables like sea aster.
From steam trains to hiking the bay
The Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme connects Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in century-old cars pulled by a steam locomotive. The route crosses the mollières, the salt meadows where sheep graze, and offers unbeatable views of the bay. Parking near the station costs only 2€ ($2) for the day.
Crossing the bay on foot remains the most memorable experience. Accompanied by a guide, you will walk for 3 to 4 hours across sand, mud, and channels from Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery. A word of caution: this crossing is dangerous without a professional guide, as the tide comes back in at the speed of a galloping horse.

Watersports and coastal activities
The beach, which is very flat and swept by steady winds, is a playground for kitesurfers and sand yachting enthusiasts. Several schools offer lessons for ages 8 and up. For a more contemplative pace, horseback rides on the sand at sunset are offered by several local equestrian centers, notably featuring Henson horses, a breed created specifically in the Baie de Somme.
Where to eat and drink in Le Crotoy?
The local culinary scene revolves around products from the bay. L'Auberge de la Marine offers creative cuisine based on local ingredients, with a set menu at 34€ ($37) that changes regularly. Chef Pascal Lefebvre prepares seared oysters, marinated red mullet, and most importantly, the local star: salt meadow lamb, whose meat gains an incomparable flavor from the sea herbs the sheep feed on.
Le Bistrot de la Baie focuses on more accessible fare with mussels prepared in a variety of ways, best paired with a white wine from Gascony. Expect to pay 17€ ($18) for a generous pot. For a quick lunch, the stalls on rue Saint-Firmin sell ultra-fresh fish and gray shrimp to be enjoyed on the go with buttered bread.
At Carré Gourmand, chef Philippe Carré works with juliettes, the local fingerling potatoes, sand-grown carrots, and offers a sea bream tartare with seaweed that is well worth a visit. Reservations are essential.
Where to stay in and around Le Crotoy?
The town center is home to boutique hotels like Les Tourelles, recognizable by its two red-and-white turrets overlooking the harbor. Rooms start at 130€ ($140), with a bay view available for an extra fee. The Hôtel de la Baie de Somme offers simpler rooms facing the port, starting at 90€ ($97).
Bed and breakfasts offer a warmer and often less expensive alternative. Toward Noyelles-sur-Mer or Rue, just a few miles away, you will find renovated Picardy farmhouses with plenty of character. For tighter budgets, Camping La Prairie has well-maintained pitches just steps from the beach.
How to get there and get around Le Crotoy?
From Paris-Gare du Nord, allow about 2 hours by train to Noyelles-sur-Mer, then connect by bus or tourist train. Tickets start at 20€ ($22) if booked in advance. By car from Paris, the A16 motorway gets you there in about 2 hours and 15 minutes via Amiens.
From Lille, it is a 1.5-hour drive. Brussels is 3 hours away, and Rouen is 1.5 hours. Parking in the summer can be complicated: arrive early or use the peripheral parking lots. Once you arrive, everything is accessible by foot or bike. A well-marked network of bike paths makes it easy to reach Saint-Valery, the Parc du Marquenterre, or Fort-Mahon-Plage.
When to go?
The period from May to October offers the best balance of mild weather and accessible activities. Spring and autumn are particularly recommended for watching migratory birds and avoiding summer crowds. July and August remain the high season, with the benefit of long sunny days but the downside of parking difficulties and packed restaurants.
Winter offers extraordinary light and a welcome sense of solitude, but the wind can be biting. Avoid planning a bay crossing during this time without proper gear. In June, the Transbaie draws thousands of runners for a race across the estuary.
For my part, I found the small town of Le Crotoy very pretty. You can get there using a little steam train between Saint Valery and Le Crotoy, which is a great activity to do with the family. The center is well preserved with typical seaside buildings in the Belle Epoque style.
