Where to stay in Okinawa: the 6 areas to know in 2026

Okinawa is two trips in one. The main island is a road trip, from the backstreets of Naha to the beaches of the north, two hours apart on the expressway. The outer islands, Miyako and Ishigaki, are an hour away by plane: you go there for the sea, and you stay there.

For a night, budget $67* in a city hotel in Naha and $168 to $340* in a beach resort, while the finest addresses go beyond $670*. Six areas follow, from the south of the main island all the way to the Yaeyama.

One base or several?

On the main island, two bases are enough: Naha in the south, then the Onna coast or Motobu in the north. The outer islands need a base of their own, because you fly there.

  • Four days: A single base, in Naha or Chatan: Shuri and the market on day one, the south next, and a day trip to Churaumi Aquarium.
  • One week: Two bases: three nights in Naha, then four on the Onna coast or in Motobu, for the beach and the north.
  • Ten to fourteen days: Three bases: Naha, then the Onna coast, then a flight to Ishigaki or Miyako to finish with the outer islands.

How much driving between two bases?

Times by car on the Okinawa Expressway, outside rush hour around Naha. The outer islands are reached by plane, the Kerama and the Yaeyama by boat.

1

Naha and the south The capital, from Kokusai-dori to Shuri Castle, the south of the island and the port for the Kerama

for a first stay without a car, and for heading out to the Kerama Islands

The only real city in the archipelago. Naha lives around Kokusai-dori, its covered arcades and the Makishi market, where you pick your fish downstairs and have it cooked upstairs. The monorail runs from the airport to Shuri Castle, no car needed. To the south, Itoman and Nanjo hold the memorials of 1945 and the sacred grove of Sefa-utaki. Boats to the Kerama leave from Tomari port. The downside: a noisy, concrete city, and no beach you would want to spend the day on.

2

Chatan and the centre The west coast of Chatan and Ginowan, and the castles in the middle of the island

for sunsets over the sea and evenings on foot

Half an hour north of Naha, Chatan faces west. In the evening, the Sunset Beach promenade fills up just as the sun drops into the sea, and American Village lines up its restaurants, its Ferris wheel and its bars. The American presence built this neighbourhood: the Kadena and Camp Foster bases are next door. Inland, the walls of Nakagusuku Castle look out over both coasts. The downside: a shopping-mall setting, and military planes overhead.

The Onna coast The beaches and capes of the west coast, from Yomitan to Nago Bay

for a beach stay in a resort, an hour from Naha

Resort coast. From one coral cape to the next, Onna strings together private beaches and hotels set right on the water. At Cape Maeda, you snorkel down into the Blue Cave, and at Cape Manza the cliff looks like an elephant's trunk. Further south, Yomitan hides its pottery workshops and the ruins of Zakimi. The expressway puts Naha an hour away, Motobu fifty minutes. The downside: life revolves around the resort, and in the evening everything means driving.

  • A car is a must in the evening
4

Motobu and the north The Motobu Peninsula, Churaumi Aquarium, Nakijin Castle and the Yanbaru forest

for Churaumi Aquarium without four hours of driving in a day

The north of the island is greener and quieter. The Motobu peninsula is home to Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park, by Emerald Beach. The curving walls of Nakijin Castle are fifteen minutes away, and Sesoko Island sits at the end of a bridge. Further up, Kunigami disappears into the Yanbaru forest. The downside: two hours' drive to the airport, and few addresses outside the resorts.

What I liked less: it is super far from the city! A 2-hour drive from Naha, that makes for 4 hours round trip in one day...

5

Miyako Miyako Island, its bridges to Irabu, Kurima and Ikema, and Shimoji Island

for the clearest water in the archipelago, fifty minutes by plane

A flat island with no rivers, and that is why the water is so clear. Three bridges link it to its neighbours: the Irabu Bridge to Irabu and Shimoji, the Kurima bridge to the southwest, the Ikema bridge to the north. Maehama beach rolls out seven kilometres of white sand. The town of Hirara keeps its market and its restaurants. The downside: little to see beyond the sea, and a car to get from one beach to the next.

  • Nothing within walking distance outside Hirara
6

Ishigaki and the Yaeyama Ishigaki, and the islands you reach by boat: Taketomi, Iriomote, Kohama, Kuroshima, Hateruma

for island-hopping by boat, from the jungle of Iriomote to the villages of Taketomi

The far end of Japan. Ishigaki is the home port: from its terminal, boats leave for Taketomi, with its coral-stone walls and water-buffalo carts, and for Iriomote, covered in jungle and mangrove. On Ishigaki itself, Kabira Bay is seen from a glass-bottom boat: swimming there is not allowed. The downside: every neighbouring island costs a boat round trip, and the sea sets the timetable.

Cons

  • Far from the rest of the archipelago

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Decide first between the main island and the outer islands: These are two different trips. The main island mixes history, city and beaches; Miyako and Ishigaki live for the sea alone. An hour's flight separates them: keep at least four nights for an outer island, or the journey eats into your stay.
  • Sleep near the aquarium rather than driving from Naha: From Naha, Churaumi Aquarium costs close to four hours on the road in a day. Stay a night in Motobu and you walk in at opening time, 8:30 am, before the tour buses, then keep the afternoon for Nakijin and Emerald Beach.
  • Check the typhoon calendar: From July to October, a typhoon can ground boats and planes for two or three days. On an outer island, keep a spare night before your international flight, and choose a refundable rate.
  • Book early for Golden Week and summer: In late April and early May, then in July and August, Japanese travellers head to Okinawa in huge numbers. Resorts on the Onna coast and hotels on Taketomi are full months ahead: book in winter for those weeks.
Where not to stay in Okinawa
  • Doing Churaumi Aquarium as a day trip from Naha: close to four hours of driving there and back.
  • Staying on the Onna coast without a car: the resorts are far from everything, and buses are rare.
  • Giving Ishigaki or Miyako just two nights: the flight and the airport eat up a whole day.
  • Keeping your last night on an outer island during typhoon season, right before your flight home.

FAQ: where to stay in Okinawa

Where to stay in Okinawa for a first visit?
In Naha to start: the monorail runs from the airport to Shuri Castle, and the market is within walking distance. Then add a few nights on the Onna coast for the beach.
Naha or the Onna coast?
Naha for the city, the restaurants and the boats to the Kerama, without a car. Onna for the beach and the resort, an hour's drive away. Over a week, do both.
Where to stay on a budget in Okinawa?
In the city hotels of Naha, around Kokusai-dori: $67* is often enough for a night, outside Golden Week and August. In Ishigaki and in Hirara, on Miyako, the hotels in the centre are affordable too.
How much does a night cost in Okinawa?
A city hotel costs $67* a night, a beach resort $168 to $340*, and the finest addresses go beyond $670*. Golden Week and summer push every price up.
Do you need to rent a car in Okinawa?
Yes, as soon as you leave Naha: buses barely serve the Onna coast, Motobu and the north. Before you go, check what Japan requires for your licence (an international permit or an official translation, depending on the country). Driving is on the left.
Miyako or Ishigaki?
Miyako for pure beach time: very clear water and bridges from island to island. Ishigaki for getting around: every day, a boat to Taketomi, Iriomote or Kohama.
