Visiting Ouro Preto, the Baroque Jewel of Minas Gerais

Editorial update on 04/11/2025

Tucked into the mountains of Minas Gerais, Ouro Preto is known for its remarkably preserved baroque architecture and authentic feel. This former mining city steps back in time through steep cobblestone streets, ornate churches, and deep-rooted local food traditions.

Remarkable Architectural Heritage

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ouro Preto is famous for its baroque churches dripping with detail, such as the São Francisco de Assis church and the Nossa Senhora do Carmo church. These buildings stand as proof of the city's immense wealth during the Brazilian gold rush.

Museums to Understand Local History

The Gold Museum and the School of Mines Museum provide a window into the region's colonial and mining history. These institutions hold broad collections ranging from raw minerals to sacred art.

A Culture-Driven City

Ouro Preto hosts regular cultural festivals, most notably the Winter Festival, which brings music, theater, and the visual arts to the forefront. These gatherings pull in artists and travelers from all over the country.

Natural Landscapes to Explore

Surrounded by green rolling hills, the city makes a great base for hiking and outdoor exploring. The nearby areas, including Itacolomi state park, are ideal for spotting local plants and wildlife.

Flavors of Minas Gerais

Ouro Preto cuisine follows the hearty, comforting traditions of Minas Gerais. Local staples include feijão tropeiro, a savory mix of beans, cassava flour, and meat, along with frango com quiabo, a traditional chicken and okra stew. Artisanal cheeses and guava-based desserts round out the culinary lineup.

Where to Eat?

  • O Passo Pizza Jazz (Centro): A spot combining Italian and Brazilian plates with live music in the background.
  • Escadabaixo Bar Cozinha (Rosário): A local favorite known for creative takes on traditional dishes and a lively atmosphere.
  • Tropea Cantina Armazem (Centro): A modern canteen serving fusion dishes with regional twists.

Where to Stay?

  • Hotel Solar do Rosário (Centro): A boutique hotel offering sweeping views of the city and attentive service.
  • Grande Hotel de Ouro Preto (Centro): A historic property designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, pairing mid-century design with comfort.
  • Pousada Classica (Centro): A welcoming inn sitting within easy walking distance of the main sights.

When to Go?

The best window to visit Ouro Preto runs from May through September during the dry season. The Winter Festival in July marks the peak of the local cultural calendar.

How to Get There?

Frequent buses run from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, reaching Ouro Preto in about 2 hours for around $12*. Renting a car is also a practical way to explore the wider surrounding region.

How to Get Around?

The historic center is best explored on foot, though the hills are steep in places. For longer trips across town, taxis and rideshare apps are readily available.

A historic city

I loved wandering down the cobblestone streets to discover all the colonial churches, surrounded by mountains with a very pleasant, temperate climate.
