While planning a trip to Crete, we went through BSP-Auto.com, an online travel and car rental agency, based on the recommendations of the Guide du Routard to avoid potential problems with car rental companies in Crete.
Upon our arrival at the rental company RIGHT CARS, the agent offered us the option to pay €60 for supplemental insurance in case of damage, or to leave a €730 security deposit via credit card. We declined the insurance offer and preferred to leave the deposit. At first, the agent refused our cards, claiming they were debit cards and not credit cards. As if it were the first time she had dealt with French customers. We showed her that most French cards are like that, that they also allow for credit transactions, and that we had no other means of payment. The agent showed her annoyance but proceeded to take the deposit and document the condition of the vehicle before we took possession.
The vehicle was handed over to us with 1/3 of a tank and was in such a dusty state that a thorough inspection of the bodywork was impossible. Despite that, we spotted a few minor defects (scratches), but the agent told us it was not necessary to note them and that there was no need to worry about it. She laughed in our faces while refusing to write them down on the vehicle condition report.
Upon our return, we returned the vehicle clean and with a fuel level much higher than when we started. The agent was not the same person as when we picked up the car. The new agent quickly inspected the bodywork and headed to the front right of the vehicle, pointing out two very slight impact marks on the edge of the rim at the boundary between the outer body and the underside of the vehicle. We asked her if it was a joke. She declared that we had to pay her €150, otherwise she would keep the €730 deposit.
She asked us to sign an accident report, which we refused because we do not consider these marks to be significant damage, as these marks are not fully visible from the outside of the bodywork and the state of cleanliness of the vehicle when we received it made it impossible to identify this type of damage.
The agent explained that it was in our best interest to sign and pay the €150 because BSP-Auto has insurance and will reimburse us for all our costs.
The agent then handed us an accident report and forced us to sign.
Faced with what appears to be an organized scam system, we persisted in our refusal and signed our disagreement on the paper in front of the agent, telling her that she cannot unilaterally decide the amount of the damage she is charging us for.
We left Right Cars angry, explaining that we would report these dishonest practices so that this racket stops existing.
That same evening, we received an email with an invoice written unilaterally in Greek for the sum of €150. Two days later, the amount was withdrawn from my bank account.
Given the numerous testimonials on the internet from tourists who have been victims of these same dishonest practices, it is regrettable that BSP-Auto and its partner the Guide du Routard allow themselves to recommend the services of the company RIGHT CARS to their clients, and therefore endorse these types of unfair, established practices.
