Place aux Herbes, the heartbeat of old Nimes
On the facade of the cathedral, rows of square holes carved into the stone baffle passersby. These centuries-old cavities were used by medieval merchants to anchor their vegetable stalls. Today, the shade of plane trees, the chatter from cafe terraces, and the scent of warm bread drifting from nearby alleys make this square the natural meeting point for locals.
Why visit Place aux Herbes?
This square has been the beating heart of l'Ecusson, the historic center of Nimes, since the early Middle Ages. Its name points to the fruit, vegetable, and flower market that occupied the space for centuries. The construction of the Halles de Nimes in 1884 brought that trading tradition to an end, but the spirit of the gathering place remains.
This is where assemblies met, religious processions formed, and pagan festivals were celebrated. It is also where bloody dramas unfolded during the Wars of Religion, most notably during the Michelade of September 1567, when about a hundred Catholics were massacred in the courtyard of the neighboring bishopric.
Facades that tell a history
You only need to look up to read several centuries of architecture. Mullioned windows bear witness to the Renaissance. Stone arcades once sheltered medieval shops. The cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor dominates the scene with its massive bell tower, featuring a 12th-century Romanesque frieze depicting scenes from the Old Testament.
The former episcopal palace, built between 1682 and 1686 for the bishop, now houses the musée du Vieux Nimes (Museum of Old Nimes). Its coffered cornice and carved lion heads are direct references to the decor of the Maison Carree. The conservatoire de musique (music conservatory) also occupies part of the building.
A square that lives all day
Cafe terraces pick up speed early in the morning. Students from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the conservatory mingle with Nimes residents of all ages, shopping bags in hand, heading toward the nearby food market. The atmosphere remains calm despite the foot traffic, a rare quality for such a central square.
What you will find around the square:
- The Halles de Nimes, open daily from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM, ranked among the best food markets in the world by the Financial Times in 2024
- The musée du Vieux Nimes and its collections on the city's textile history
- Cobblestone alleys leading toward the Maison Carree and the Arenes
- Several restaurants and bars with outdoor seating
Local tip: Arrive early on a weekday to soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the square before the crowds arrive. A coffee on a terrace facing the cathedral around 8:30 AM is the best way to watch the neighborhood wake up.
The heart of Nîmes! This lovely little square is a testament to the city's past, with its stone buildings, old arcades, and cathedral. It is also a great spot to grab a drink on a terrace or have lunch. The place is always very lively thanks to the nearby art school, the market, and the many shops in the area. Don't miss out on a visit here.
