Marina de Fezzano à Portovenere

Portovenere Marina, a colorful bulwark on the Ligurian Sea

Gozzi bob gently at the water line. These wide, round-bellied wooden fishing boats are tethered along the Calata Doria, so close to the restaurant terraces that you could almost reach out and touch their hulls from your seat. Behind them, a wall of pastel facades rises four or five stories high in shades of ochre, saffron yellow, dusty pink, and olive green.

This waterfront has a name: the Palazzata. It looks like no other harbor on the Italian Riviera.

Why visit Portovenere Marina?

This tiny port is far from a conventional marina. Its origins trace back to Roman times. The ancient Portus Veneris, mentioned as early as the 1st century B.C., was already sheltering a community of fishermen. When the Republic of Genoa purchased the village from the lords of Vezzano in 1113, it radically transformed the area.

To defend this strategic point in its war against Pisa, Genoa erected a fortified enclosure with the Palazzata serving as the maritime facade. Each tower house served as both a home and a defensive wall.

The result is an architectural ensemble that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, alongside the Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto. The port is also a prime starting point for exploring the Gulf of Poets by sea, whether by ferry, private boat, or kayak.

The Palazzata: a waterfront telling eight centuries of history

The tower houses of the Palazzata are built directly against one another, without a single gap between them. Their foundations plunge straight into the rock. On the sea side, the facades are smooth and almost entirely free of ornamentation. There are no balconies and only narrow windows.

This was not an aesthetic choice but a defensive necessity. It was impossible to grip the walls or force the openings. On the land side, a few steep staircases lead to the caruggi (medieval alleys) of the village. At the western end, the house known as dei d'Oria stands out with its Tuscan-style pointed arches.

The Capitular Tower, dating from 1160, marks the landward end of this inhabited rampart. It now houses luxury accommodations but retains its original appearance with its cut stone and mullioned windows. For the best photos of the entire row, head to the ferry landing early in the morning. The light hits the facades directly, and the colors vibrate without the shadow of the castle.

A living port for fishermen and pleasure boaters

The port has about 40 berths, including 30 for boats between 10 and 50 meters and about 10 for smaller craft. Depths range from 3 to 5.5 meters. The marina is managed by Portovenere Servizi Portuali e Turistici (Portovenere Port and Tourist Services) and has earned the Blue Flag label for its environmental management. Services include fresh water, electricity, Wi-Fi, restrooms, and a 5-ton crane.

Life in the harbor remains defined by fishing. The gozzi return in the morning with anchovies, red mullet, and the famous muscoli, local mussels farmed in the open waters of the gulf. Several restaurants on the Calata Doria serve them that same day. Anchorage is also possible in the Bocche strait, between Portovenere and Palmaria island, during calm weather over a sandy bottom.

Pro tip: speed is limited to 3 knots in the port and 6 knots in the Portovenere channel. In high season, transit berths are scarce. Contact the port on VHF channel 9 before approaching. For non-boaters, the pedestrian promenade along the Calata Doria is the most pleasant spot in the village for an aperitivo facing Palmaria.

Gateway to the Gulf of Poets

Shuttles from the Cooperativa Barcaioli (Boatmen's Cooperative) depart from this quay for Palmaria island, a five-minute crossing. Ferries from Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of Poets Navigation) connect Portovenere to La Spezia, Lerici, and the five villages of the Cinque Terre from late March to early November. Private boat tours, sunset cruises, and excursions around the Palmaria-Tino-Tinetto archipelago can be organized directly at the ticket offices on the port.

The view from the water is worth the trip alone. As you leave the harbor, you see the entire Palazzata rise as a single block above the water, topped by the gray mass of the Castello Doria and extended on the horizon by the black-and-white striped silhouette of the San Pietro church perched on its rocky promontory.
