Mira de Aire Caves: 7 miles of subterranean tunnels beneath dinosaur tracks

In 1947, local residents digging a narrow well at the Moinhos Velhos (Old Mills) site lowered themselves down by rope. They were met with an immense, dark, silent void, echoing with the distant sound of water. They had just stumbled upon the largest cave network in Portugal, formed 150 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic, back when dinosaurs were still leaving their footprints in these limestone beds.

Why visit the Mira de Aire Caves?

Of the 7 miles of galleries known today, 600 meters are open to the public. This section is a journey in itself, involving 683 steps to descend, chambers with ceilings reaching 100 feet high, and a depth of 360 feet below the surface. In 2007, a temporary drop in water levels revealed an additional 1,000 meters of tunnels. The network is still revealing its secrets.

It is one of the most compelling natural sites in central Portugal, easily combined with Fátima, just 9 miles away, or the nearby monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha.

The guided tour experience

The tour begins with a short introductory video before a guide leads the group along the path. You descend the stairs gradually, chamber by chamber. The longest single staircase features 105 consecutive steps. The air grows damp and the stone turns cold. The temperature in the galleries hovers around 11°C (52°F) year-round, so pack a light jacket.

The Sala Grande and the Rio Negro

The Sala Grande (Great Room), the centerpiece of the route, commands an instinctive silence. Ceilings rise between 30 and 100 feet. Stalactites have been growing for millennia, with a single drop falling every hundred years or so. Farther down, the Rio Negro (Black River), an underground stream, continues to carve out galleries that spelunkers are still exploring today.

The end of the route: lights and debate

The exit is via elevator, about 1,000 feet from the entrance. Before that, the tour ends with a photo exhibit dedicated to 70 years of Portuguese spelunking, followed by a display of rocks, minerals, and gems. The colorful light shows and fountains that punctuate this final area are a point of contention, as some visitors find them unnecessary. It is a deliberate commercial choice that contrasts with the natural sobriety of the rest of the tour.

Friendly tip: A free audioguide app is available to supplement the guide's explanation in French, English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and sign language. Download it before heading in, as there is no mobile reception underground. Tours do not have fixed times. You buy your ticket, and the guide lets you know the time of the next departure. In high season, the wait time is generally no more than 30 minutes.

The 5 Sentidos tour: for curious travelers who want to go further

In addition to the standard tour, the caves offer a caving option accessible to beginners called the Visita 5 Sentidos (5 Senses Tour). The total duration is 2 hours. The group leaves the marked tourist path to venture into an undeveloped parallel gallery, headlamps on and gloves in hand. In this wild section, your headlamp is the only source of light.

Equipment provided and practical advice:

  • Helmet with headlamp and gloves provided by the site
  • Sturdy, high-top shoes are recommended (or rubber boots)
  • Clothing that can get dirty and wet (the galleries are damp)
  • A small bottle of purified cave water is given to participants

What makes this visit memorable

  • The largest cave network in Portugal, open to the public since 1974
  • Geology dating back 150 million years, clearly explained
  • Free audioguide available in multiple languages
  • Accessible caving option (Visita 5 Sentidos) with no prior experience required
  • Exit via elevator, so you do not have to climb back up the 683 steps
  • Reasonable prices, especially for children

Points to keep in mind

  • Guided explanations are in Portuguese only; the app helps, but remember to download it beforehand
  • Caves may close temporarily during heavy rain as the karst network floods quickly (check the cave's Facebook page the day before)
  • No online ticket sales for individual visitors
  • Colorful light shows at the end are polarizing and not to everyone's taste

Very impressive

The Mira de Aire Caves are truly very impressive. The rock formations inside are really worth the visit. This is an activity you can do with kids without any worries. Just make sure to bring good shoes because the ground is slippery. Also, bring a jacket because the temperature is chilly in the caves.
