A Rajput fortress perched above Maota Lake
The silhouette of Amber Fort rises over the Aravalli hills, with winding stone ramparts embracing the ridge and looking down on Maota Lake. From the water, the palace appears to float above its own reflection.
This sprawling complex of palaces and fortifications served as the residence of the Rajput rulers before the capital moved to Jaipur.
Why visit Amber Fort
Raja Man Singh started construction in 1592 on the foundations of an 11th-century fort. Successive rulers added courtyards, residential quarters, and temples over the decades until the capital shifted in 1727.
The result is a striking example of Hindu-Mughal architecture, featuring carved stone walls, tiered courtyards, and decorative motifs blending Rajput and Mughal styles. In 2013, UNESCO named the site a World Heritage Site as part of a group of hill forts in Rajasthan.
What to see inside
The visit begins in the main entry courtyard, reached through the Suraj Pol (Sun Gate). From there, you walk into the Diwan-i-Aam, an open-columned hall of public audience where the rulers met with their subjects.
The highlight of the route is the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), featuring walls inlaid with thousands of tiny glass mirrors that once caught the flicker of a single candle. Nearby, the Jai Mandir (Temple of Victory) showcases similar glasswork.
The fort sits directly below Jaigarh Fort in the same Aravalli valley, offering sweeping views from its ramparts out over Maota Lake and the stone walls snaking along the ridgeline.
In the evening, a sound and light show takes place at the foot of the fort, with schedules and ticketing details varying by season.
Friendly tip: arrive right at opening time around 8:00 AM to explore the courtyards and halls before the crowds arrive and the midday heat sets in. Plan for at least two hours to see the entire site, and aim for a visit between October and March when the weather is much more comfortable.

How long for this activity
Allow 2 to 3 hours to explore the entire site.
This site is truly stunning, and it is located about ten kilometers from Jaipur. Buses will take you there for a really low price. Once you are there, watch out for the many vendors who try to rip you off. But it is still worth the trip, the fort is magnificent.
